What is agency work?

Driveroneuk:
Driverofhope, might we enquire your age?

I believe driverofhope is 20 and trying to decide what career path to take, hence the questions

driverofhope:
I hear this term alot on here, with those struggling to find a job.

Do you mean, any sort of work ie stacking shelves/order picker or is it something else?!

It is temporary driving work for an employment agency .

The length of work can range from as short as a single day to several months or years. There are also temp to permanent positions where you will work 3 months or so at a company via the agency and then get offered a fulltime position at the end of it.

The company you get sent to are responsible for insuring you to drive. The agency may have its own insurance to cover any damage you cause.

It is an excellent way of getting experience of a wide variety of loads and vehicles in a very short period of time.

agencies can be jack of all trades or just specialise in one thing
there are nursing agencies
teaching accounting and driving agencies

i have done driving like now
farm work (pre gang master regs) warehose jobs tipping boxes, laboured in factories and even had a week as a washer upper in local works canteen when regular girl couldnt get in
(would i do it cos i lived so close and you still get the travel allowance  ) and so i did

Nor: Uniform; Personal PPE type stuff; A locker to dump your crap in (therefore you lug it far and wide) - or a lot of the social niceties that the full timers might have. Places with a canteen should let you in though - but take some emergency butties and a pocket full of change for weird coffee machine arrangements JIC.

I liken it to being the ‘new boy’ every day whereby the full-timers resent your carefree (& often better although briefly paid) status but the clerk gives you the cack wagons, etc…

I have been working for my agency for 6 years and it’s the only one I’m on,it’s owned by the firm to supply themselves with extra drivers as and when required as well as sending some out.
We have a lot of full time drivers on who even now are getting between 3 and 5 shifts a week.
I started on here when I retired wishing to work one or two nightshifts a week,at weekend naturally for the weekend rates.
I have worked every Friday night/Saturday morning, and as a part time job,the one night is enough, but I’ve made myself available for Thursday night/Friday morning if there’s any work on,and this last couple of months being the holiday period,I’ve been working the two shifts.
At the end of every year I get holiday pay, which for only working one or two shifts,a week works out at £200-£300 for the year.
Although some of the motors are for campers, most of the fleet is double shifted, and now coming up to three years old with a million km’s under them, they are being replaced at the moment.
I’ve heard there are some dodgy agencies out there,I’m glad I’ve got a good one.

It also means they have no responsibilities regarding holidays, sick pay and pensions. Its the future for big business.

Whilst the haulier doesn’t, the agency does have a responsibilty.

some one of 20 and they do not know what agency work is it takes some believing.

To be fair - It’s not a strange thing to happen - school, college etc and by the time they are 20 all they know is that environment - I’ve met quite a few young people that have no concept of what the real world contains because all their life so far has been classroom education.

Is the OP just very naive…? Sure does ask some daft questions on here…

Or the biggest fisherman of all time :unamused:

Duty of Care; Safe Systems of Work; Risk Assessments; Specialist (i,e,. non-personal) Protective Equipment provision; COSHH Assessments; WTD & European Driver Reg’s Compliance, etc, etc?

MY my, what a fickle lot :unamused: , there are no shortage of positive responses when somebody starts a post with " this may be a stupid question ", and the reply is " there are no stupid questions ". Make your minds up chaps.
