What do you enjoy about HGV driving

Santa:
Crawling out of my nice warm bed at silly-O-clock and de-icing the car is no fun at all. Once I am in a nice warm cab and out on the open road with some coffee inside me things begin to improve.

Then I see one of those bright frosty dawns over the Malverns or the Chilterns and I remember why I enjoy this job.

thats my thoughts as well.

i love the summertime watching the sun come and you know its going to be a good day. i like being on my own ( which at first takes some getting used to ) :sunglasses:

i like doing containers so i can sit on the laptop or watch a film or even just have a good sleep… currently ive been here 3 hours and not even the yard to be loaded yet.

i enjoy it when you have the job for the day so you can plan your day out and plan you stops and breaks.

i love being able to listen to what i want on the radio.

i like it when all the fields are full of those yellow flowers in the summer. :grimacing:

my best memory of driving was about 7 years ago when i was on for longs of leeds and one friday i was heading for felixstowe it was the afternoon red hot and all i had to do at felix as change trailers and stay there the night. no rushing steady away with the window open and some chilling music on.

Great to get comments from a transport manager or company owner saying to drivers,“WHAT TOOK YOU SO LONG”,and why are you not there yet,i have told the customer you would be there at such a time, now they are angry with me,because you are LATE!!!Can only do 56mph or 40mph on single track,a bit a maths to work out simple speed, distance, time formulaes goes a long way.And get to places where you know someone has told porky pies,at your expense,to make feel like a spare part. Some places you get a free hot drink, for drivers, and some a bit snotty, and look down on you.

My response is load up my tracker they never like that one and when they phone up where are you? Just the only thing missing from any company common sense must be a qualification you need to work in the office’s? Maybe they do it in stage’s gold star when you expect a load from rugby to bristol takes 2hrs including tipping time to be ready to return?

I like the freedom of been your own boson the road. But im pretty lucky my boss is one who as long as you get the job done he leaves you to run your own show.

Your transport manager needs to get off the drugs.
Heres how it goes at our place.

TM) "What time will you be there phil? I’ve got the customer on the other line.
ME) "About 11.00.
TM to customer) "He’ll be with you by 12.00.

If i’m there by 11.00, We look good. If i’m there by 12.00, We look prety accurate.

Did a delivery yesterday - new customer, not been before but had a clear run and got there 45 mins early.

Goods-in bloke goes into his “sorry mate not booked in” routine.

Me “They said it was urgent”

GI bloke “Dont give a ■■■■ mate - if it’s not booked in - it don’t get tipped.”

Suit comes out of back office - "Is that the powder?”

Me “Yes mate.”

Suit "Fred Jim - get this stuff tipped pronto - we’re waiting for it.

30 minutes later I am on my way, 24 pallets lighter with a cheery wave to ■■■■■■ off goods in guy.

That’s the sort of thing that makes my day. The sun was shining too

I would have stuck my 2 fine fingers up at the GI bloke

Keep it coming chaps, good to know you can still anjoy the job. I am sure many factors determine this like, the company you work for, your TM, truck etc etc, rough with the smooth!

What is everyone favourite load/run?

I like being able to drive along with no trousers on and no one knowing !

I like being out on the road in the uk & Europe, where you can see a lot of great things and meet a lot of great people  and ok some that are not ok  .

That is pretty much why i want to get into this game, im almost 25 so its a good age and i love being on the road/driving, not the same office wall everyday and i like to be out doing my own thing.

All that attracts me to the job, glad we are still able to do that, seems nothing good lasts forever though

What a crock of crap.

Do you want to be a loner ( the brotherhood of drivers is a myth and always was. If you ever see a transport cafe ( sorry not many of them left anymore ) with 30 trucks parked out side the only reason you will see 2 truckers sat at the same table is if there are only 29 tables ).

Like listening to the radio ■■? Well Wogan will still be around long after you have become disillusioned with being a Knight of the road.

By all means join an Irish company and relish in the lax interest in rules especially anything to do with speed limits ( the Irish truck companies seem to think 55 is the lower limit.

When you are a wizzened old trucker you’ll really enjoy the college graduate transport office wallah telling you how to do the job you have been doing since before he/she was a twinkle in someones eye ( I say someones eye since most of them would have trouble tracing their lineage through the paternal side if you know what I mean )).

Traffic jams, road works, other road users the list of things that will annoy you, make you tear your hair out and just get up your nose is endless. If you can rise above all that then you may just survive the business.

Rugby to Livingstone back to tebay truck stop!!! Best ever run… Most drivers are friendly there to! Had the misfortunate stop at southwaite out of hours thing and oh my god the southbound service’s was a nightmare never had so many rude truck drivers… one of them had a air leak and instead of letting it build on tick over at 1am sat there foot on full rev’s!!! than again at about 4am another truck driver. Plenty parked between us lot sleeping and couldn’t park out the way on the left side where non of us were sleeping!! best thing though when we awoke in the morning me and a few other drivers did have a good old moan about it lol. But sorry mr vosa man but hours or not i’m never stopping there again.

hiya,
being a retired ex driver is the only thing i like, the job used to be good and i used to enjoy it but from the late 70s it went downhill drivers became numbers and faceless no comraderie as in my early years i did become a driver (forces) in 1954 and civilian in 1957 so iv’e done a bit i didn’t have to buy my hgv but if i had too now i’d blow the money on a holiday and find a proper job,
thanks harry long retired.

I love my job! Pretty much every aspect of it has made me smile at some point. After 6 years hot-seating for big firms, i now work for a small company and have my own unit where i can leave all my kit and not have to cart it about like a pack mule. No two days are ever the same so i dont get bored. I recently parked up for the night on site right on the top of the hill(mountain?) at Glen Turret in Creiff. I woke up to the most amazing view! I also like scaring idiot car drivers with the air horns :smiling_imp: I used to like the factory i worked at, but this is much better.

I love the job I’m in, it certainly beats driving coaches for a living… the load dont answer back for one. I have, what I consider a great truck, which is comfy and certainly motors along, ask most of the Scania/DAF/Volvo drivers I go tanking past…. I get to meet some great people, and get to see some great countryside, while relaxing without a care in the world… unless something really goes ■■■■ up. Tomorrow I’m doing a trailer movement from Rugby to Plymouth, which means I wont be home tomorrow night, I get to watch what I want on my TV, listen to what I want on the radio or even put on a CD. My TM doesnt bother me unless they have a reload that needs doing and its urgent, or if he needs to know how many nights out I did the week previous.

Willy i think your in the wrong game mate :open_mouth:

What an angry man you are

Its the best job I have ever done, think of it sunglasses on, headed off down the open road no one bothering you, you can only do what you can so your hours dictate your work (unless you run below the mark if you know what i mean) so what if you get stuck in traffic your getting paid to sit there listening to the radio. cant fault it at all. well maybe you can fault the dirty MSAs lol but thats another thread.

I prefer nights. The perfect time for the job is from around May to September when it’s still light for the first few hours of your shift. There’s nothing like driving down the road on a cool sunny summers evening, cruise control on with the window down and some good tunes on the radio. You get to miss most of the traffic and coming back up the A1 in the early hours, you can often be the only vehicle in sight.
