Welsh Border and Mid Wales Hauliers 1950's onwards

Mark, I can remember when I drove for Tilcon we used to run to large road jobs, ie M18, A1 etc, and we would be sharing machines with RMC and Tarmac trucks. The material was laid in batches, 100 tons from Tilcon, 100 from RMC etc. Also when Tilcon surfaced the M40 from the M42 down towards Warwick when it was first constructed in the late '80’s a large percentage of the base course was supplied by Redland at Mountsorrel as Tilcon’s four plants (Ballidon,Mancetter, Pershore and the onsite plant) couldn’t keep the two machines supplied with enough material. Latterly I did some work for RMC at night and they would load any wagon, Tarmac, Bardon etc as it was cheaper than running their own trucks and drivers at night!

Pete.

Took these at Mansel Davies yard back in august on my mobile.

A few more taken in Mansel Davies yard, some of the old one’s parked up.

A few of the Volvo FL’s parked in Mansel Davies yard, there were quite a few more, plus a load of older F7’s.

hiya,
Dave is that little ERF still a runner looks quite tidy from a distance.
thanks harry long retired.

Hi Harry,
I think it had been a breakdown crane, didn’t really have a good look, they were shunting trailers in and out of that yard, most of the lorries in that yard were old one’s parked up,or tippers with no work, just about everything they run nowadays is Volvo as they are main dealers, there was a heck of a lot of lorries there for a week day. They have big wreckers,so I would think the ERF is just a keepsake now. Will have a better look again someday, thats if allowed in there.
Cheers Dave.

Last one of Mansel Davies, only took six as I didn’t know what they would turn out like. Bit of a missed opportunity on my part,as I could have took a lot more.

Hi Bewick,
There were plenty in a worse state than that. I think a lot of cannibalism goes on in that part of that yard. They have plenty to go at. Its amazing that a big outfit can survive,so far out these days.
Cheers Dave

Good on them Dave ! I remember we once had bought a secondhand Scania 80 ( the only one, honest) and it was the most unreliable bag of **** we ever ran ( apart from a 2nd hand Big J ) You name it this Scanny got every thing replaced until we had had enough and I said to the Fleet Engineer ""park that BD up down the yard !!! But I tell you what it was a never ending source of spares for the 81’s we operated which had joined the fleet brand new and were treated to the "Bewick TLC " But I reckon this rouge 80 yielded up 2/3 £ooo’s in new parts so it did redeem itself in the long run !!! Don’t let the B*s grind you down . Bewick.

Hi Bewick,
Its obviously good housekeeping, they are Volvo main dealers as you probably know. They have another garage at Carmarthen,so I would imagine they kep a lot of other hauliers older kit running those extra years. I was amazed wen I first saw their yards at Llanfyrnach a few years ago how far off the beaten track they are.Theres more lorries than people in that small village, also they must be the biggest employer for quite a radius from there.
Cheers Dave.

Time for a few more from the A1.

Thanks to Pete (Windrush) for his instersting information about the mixing of trucks on job sites, which I didnt realise had been happening for a while.

Hi Mark,
Another nice batch of pics, are you a tipper driver yourself  We only have Tarmac in white this way, only a handful of Hanson’s at Builth, they are still blue, same as your way. Ennstone are blue- yellow. There are several doing their own work in different colours, but at the end of the day I suppose its the cost of painting them a different colour to the factory white.
I will never get bored with good lorry pics Mark.
Cheers Dave.

Hiya I’ve just looked on Google maps at Llanfyrnach. You can see how much tackle there is in the Davis yard well worth a visit. I bet you’d never get in that place for a look … then again its miles from anywhere.
john.

Hi John,
Been in there,as you can see from the pics, they are Volvo dealers,so I don’t think they will turn you away. I looked around, tried to ask was it alright, nobody stoped for me to ask,aso I just drove around two of their yards, plenty of kit to see.Now at christmas would be the time to see it,most of their lorries would be in the yards then.
Cheers Dave.

Hi jonmea,
Cracking pics,I always think tippers look good painted yellow, must be something to do with the fact that the one’'s I drove were that colour.
Cheers Dave.
