Welsh Border and Mid Wales Hauliers 1950's onwards

A couple of artics having a break, outside the Strinds quarry.

A rare site, a four wheeler belonging to Sharples of Eardisley, pictured new in 1953.
It always said Sharples of Clifford on the side, because the telephone exchange was at Clifford.

There would still be plenty of work if we all went back to driving around in that size of truck Dave. When I started at the quarry in 1975 virtually all the O/D’s had four wheelers, now there are none at all.

Pete.

Hi Pete,
Still a few four wheelers working out of the quarries this way, about six. I was refering to it being a rare site to see a four wheeler of Sharples, most of what I remember were six, eight and artics.
Got a few more of theirs to put on here.
Cheers Dave.

This lorry was featured in the commercial moter about twenty years ago, it was considered old then, it was driven at that time by Jack Wiliams from Kington. A lot of Sharples tippers had coil wells, they hauled sand from the midlands to the south wales steel plants, aand loaded steel coils back.

This was the last of Sharples artics, driven by John Williams from Eardisley, who also drove their first many years earlier. This vehicle had a 26 ton payload with an alloy bodied tipping trailer, running at 38 ton gross. It is still parked in their shed.

Another of the 265L Rolls engined Foden.
