That’s a cracking photo of an early diesel ■■■■■■ there Dave, perhaps a P4 perkins or a york motor. Both were pigs to start but the York became the engine of choice and fore runner to today’s motor. The York was noisey, but had a sound of its own. In my ears it was sweet.

Dave the Renegade:
The forerunner to the Transit. The Ford Thames van was a good van in its day.
Have to agree with you there Dave, my father had one when I was a nipper, was to trade it in for a new Transit, but ended up with a new J4 one of many he ran along with MorrIs 1000s, a JU 250 less said about that the better, a Ford Anglia van and an Hillman Imp van. They were used to deliver fresh green groceries and meat to houseolds 40 years b4 Tesco ever thought of it. Progress my arse!.

Hi Paul,
Roberts of Knighton had a load of these Transits in pick up form,as you say a pig to start.A local builder near here had one which was always hard to start, but it didn’t stop someone starting it and pinching it.
I drove the Austin J4 and J2 vans for a builder, also a Ford Thames with a diesel engine which had a column change.A lot of the blokes couldn’t manage the column change, but I found it OK.I drove Austin A55/60 pickups with it as well back in my teenage days .
Cheers Dave.
