Welsh Border and Mid Wales Hauliers 1950's onwards

Dave the Renegade:

This driver has been parking an artic here for over 40 years that I can remember,on the A40 near Carmarthen.

Looks like he’s testing his weigher or drying the body out…

How long has that lamp post being there? I don’t give much for its chances in the future though!!! and that bloke thats parked there for 40 years will no doubt get the blame, when it was one of Smiths of Bletchington wot did it!!! Dennis

That lamp post has been there as long as I have seen an artic parked there. That’s what caught my eye years ago Dennis,he obviously had the knack as a country driver of skewing it around the post.
Cheers Dave.

We ended up with an electric pole in the middle of the depot at Milnthorpe after we bought the BR goods yard and took the fence down.Norweb wouldn’t re-site it even though I offered to pay! We put some cast concrete blocks round it,the only damage it got was backing into the stay wire and bending the metalwork at the top of the pole, which you can see on the depot shots on the old Bewick thread!! Dennis.

hiya,
Dave is that method of securing a body still legal i thought it should have to have twistlock like fastenings in this day and age or is it a case of farmers flouting the law as per usual, but then again i’m very likely wrong and everything is OK.
thanks harry long retired.

Hi ya all, Throughout my career in livestock haulage Ive seen many worse securing methods than on that Scania. One evening I forgot to bolt-down ` after lowering a cattle box onto a flat. Next morning I travelled 1 mile to the first farm to load cattle. As I walked down the side of my wagon after loading I was horrified to see the securing bolts missing.
I took a chance and slowly drove back to the garage and grabbed the bolts before my father knew what I had returned for.
Never again did I make that mistake !!! Possibly the weight of the cattle would be enough to keep the box from toppling off , but I am not recommending my luck to others. Cheers, cattle wagon man.

Could that Scania with the body tied onto it be used for hay and straw aswell? Looks long enough.

Quite possibly is used on the hay and straw Nathan,as you go further into Wales from this area, there is very little corn grown.
Almost all the straw is bought in from the Border counties and further away.
Cheers Dave.

Yes Dave and it being the driest April on record hay and straw prices will rocket come Autumn so money will be made by the "few"if youv’e got storage space fll it up with the afore mentioned and you’ll clean up, should have been a stockbroker methinks.
thanks harry long retired.

A local Farmer reckons its going to be drier than 1976 Harry, whether he has a direct link to some Prophet I don’t know, but myself I will just wait and see.
I think you are exactly right about the hay and straw prices being high, its the old supply and demand situation, and the supplies look as if they could be low.
Cheers Dave.
