This picture was taken in the Gore quarry with Elwyn Mills from Kington driving this Aveling Barford Dumper.

Smiths had one of those dumpers at Stanton Harcourt; It was a spare truck to a Foden 6wheel dumptruck known as “the Iron Lady” (wonder who it was named after!). I remember the Barford had a mechanism that meant you could turn the seat around to drive it with the tipper in front of you although it was long since seized in my time. It was also notoriously unstable at speed (I remember being told at least twice it had tipped over).

yeah not bad,he was good afew years ago and even painted some of jprs of rhayader,but i supose not as fast on the gun as you get older.he hadsnt been very well over the last few years but he enjoyed restoring davids borderder

This one went to Dolyhir quarry from the Gore,then Elwyn had a bigger Aveling Barford without the dual driving controls,they had two of the bigger one’s.

David said that your Dad often takes the Borderer to shows for him Dunc.Not an easy job sprayinng a lorry,the cab is a bit high for a start.

Should be a nice lorry when it’s restored Dunc.I have a print of on of Cullimore’s Micky Mouse eight wheeler Fodens up on the wall,taken from an original painting by Alan Spillett.
