A few of us have been discussing plans for our DCPC courses and i seem to have a major problem. Because i have known my current client for a long time i did all the weekend shifts in December for them since i know they always struggle to get enough drivers on fri/sat/sun. I am quite happy to do them all but backshift on Saturday is usually only in December. Now there are 3 long trunks and after a few no shows and one regular going back to the forces, i asked if i could do it. Seemingly the bosses intervened to give me the shifts which started 2 weeks ago. Now i have been asked to do a daily task by the boss to report every day by email regarding a problem that he has only just come across and in his words, i have kicked over a hornets nest (HE asked ME to carry out this task after another driver informed him of an issue we are finding with trailers when we pick them up) and so this is a big thing just now. This guy is still reasonably new to the depot and i have had no dealings with him until 2 weeks ago. I am hired, not employed and so he literally has my income in his hands and can immediately ban any driver from the site so i don’t want to rock the boat, especially since he has trusted me to do this special task during my normal duty.
now i am hearing about companies only doing CPC training on Saturdays which does make sense but it is really going to cause a problem for me since i have only just managed to get the Saturday shifts that i wanted. What the hell am i going to do about my DCPC? I want it out of the way now so i can forget about it
Contact one or several training companies, all our training has been done weekdays in work time, i don’t suppose for a moment thats unique, the company you’re working for now not have a plan you could tack onto?
As for the daily report thing, looks like you’re getting your feet well under the table there by making yourself indespensible, thats the way to do it, doesn’t sound like you’re for the chop to me.
This boss joined the company in September but i have known most of the staff here for 7 years. This has always been my favourite job and i have worked for dozens of companies. There have been ups and downs and it can be hard work to get things back on schedule after a problem but these days i have a cushy job on trunking only. Occasionally i might have chores while waiting but rather than moan i just get on with it. Right now i really don’t have any complaints at all and this is coming from someone who has been called victor meldrew ![]()
i think i am pretty safe but i don’t want to be cocky about it and now that the boss is dealing with me directly instead of through line managers, i really cant do anything remotely wrong. Most minor things are ignored or not noticed but i feel like i am under the spotlight just now. Not working every Saturday is not an option for quite a while. I did request it and they made it happen!
i think my old agency are doing in house training but i don’t know when. The agency i work for on this contract are trying to get DCPC on Wednesdays and Saturdays but haven’t got enough drivers to book a day. They would need to cover our work at the same time so that could take time to recruit. The click is still ticking though and it is ultimately MY responsibility
I dont see a problem here.do your cpc during the week

There is a bit of a clue there Scanny ![]()
OP are you by any chance ex forces?
A lot of training providers prefer mid-week DCPC courses rather than weekends…they host weekday modules as it fits in with their working week & Saturday DCPC training is a pain (opening training centre, instructor availability etc.). You should have no problem sourcing mid-week training locally, why not ask your mate the boss-man if he’ll pay half DCPC costs■■? After all you can’t be in two places at once!!!
Scanny its willy waving isnt it.tell the truth

That would explain it, he is suffering from “can’t think for himself syndrome”. I have found it quite common amongst ex forces personnel.
I did a google search and the very first one I clicked on had 56 DCPC training days listed between now and the end of August and only 10 of those were on a Saturday.

…Not if you are paying yourself you don’t. Get them modiules any time you want, since you’re calling the shots by being their paying customer.
…On the other hand, waiting for the firm to come up with your DCPC hours is like a non-driver waiting for the firm to “put them through the LGV course”… Never going to happen in this day and age any more is it? - That kind of thing went out of fashion in the late 80’s didn’t it? ![]()
I’m of course talking of newbie staff who have zero hours credit here. Firms won’t take you on as of about a year ago, because they don’t want to pay for your training straight out the gate so to speak.
