As Wheelnut and paulb have said - pricing a job at £3 or more a mile to ensure you still make money even if you come back empty is going to be just as quick a route to going out of business as running around for a quid a mile (and a mars bar) as your wagon is hardly ever going to leave the yard.
been doin it 17 years and yes i get 630 for glasgow.no drinkin tea or twiddlin thumbs.just good service.i see pauls theory now but some guys need to wake up and smell the coffee

£630 for Glasgow ? one way ? from York ?
I used to find Scotland near impossible to get a decent rate out, back down south, rates offered are or used to be ridiculous.
Backoad rate, sorry a load is a load, u still have the same overheads no matter where you are going to or coming from
I remembered being offered work from Scotland To Brittany taking Fish ( by an a fish manufacturer / exporter), couldnt even get near the quote given by Mesgeun of £650! Hence Y im no longer in it!
Paul, I hope your new venture works out, I take my hat off to you to starting a new venture and saying good bye to your old one. At least you have the sense to realise its not quite working out for you instead of continuing and hoping for the best.
The industry becomes more and more difficult each passing year to make a decent profit. I cant see it getting any easier…
For those who can find good rates long may it continue…
Good luck in your new business Paul.I hope this dosn’t mean we are going to see the back of you on this site,I have always found your comments to be sensible and informative as opposed to some who give it the billy big ■■■■■■■■ but usually talk out of their arses
I’m glad it was a decsion you took rather than one forced upon you
Sorry to hear you’re packing it in Paul, hope you’ll keep posting,as someone else said they were worthwhile, some of the posts on here would remind me of CB in its heyday when you would get "children "on playing music, yes you know who you are.
All the best in your new venture Paul and a MERRY CHRISTMAS.
regards derek

I’ve been doing it, since 1903 and if I don’t get 3 grand, I don’t even get in the cab.
In seriousness though, I have a good mate I talk to most days in the same job as I suppose many of us do. The standing joke is, we can play with the calculator and justify just about anything when we want to. ie coming back empty ‘Aye but the mpg’s way better’ etc etc.
But; when the day comes, that you don’t enjoy what you’re doing, or even if you do enjoy it you’re obviously making nowt/going backwards. It’s time to make a change. My mate’s still doing the same job every day, and still making decent money, I’ve completely changed the way I work, and am a lot happy with my lot. So err… what was my point?
Can’t remember, just do what you want, and let others do the same mebbe?
Good luck with your new venture, Paul. Maybe getting out of the OD-thing was the right thing to do (for you) but I’m gutted to hear that you’ve binned Canada!!
I thought we was going to be the ‘Big Freight Yorkshire Massive’!!!
got to admit i’d rather be going to canada as a fresh start than going back into the building game here but i think the reality of us going when the paper work started arriving saw a bit of panic set in with the wife, who upto that point had been all for it, it’s one thing to sit and talk about it but when it comes to signing papers and putting the house on the market etc you’ve both got to be certain, she wasn’t so that was that.
on the brightside had a good response from old costomers and we’ve got some decent work lined up for january to get us going.
thanks to all for the well wishes.
paul.
