We used to collect a 15 yrd roll on bin (approx 10 ton)full of dairy produce, yoghurt & cream, from A chilled warehouse in Mk & dump it in Brogborough landfill, every Day !
I always thought “What a waste”
Why didn’t they sort their stocking levels out properly ■■
Also used to regularly collect a few tons of Lindt Chocolate (just out of date) from Leighton Buzzard & dump it.
Then there was the booze, I never brought any for 4 years-Whisky,Vodka,Gin,Brandy,Bacardi,
Wine,Beer,Lager,Cider you name in I had it- all came out of a Porta Paka from an RDC in Northampton, 2 or 3 times a week. Thousands & Thousands of pounds worth all destined for landfill.
Most of this waste is down to very bad management, would you buy £200 worth of groceries a week them throw £100 worth way ? (Not forgetting that it actually ‘Costs’ to throw it away aswell !)

I’ve always wondered what happens to yesterday’s papers that don’t get sold do they cart them away to be recycled or do that throw them in the bin it seems really stupid that loads of this stuff is being wastedThey get recycled. The newsagents send unsold papers back to the wholesalers. The wholesaler loads them into big cages and then they are collected by a haulier who takes them off somewhere to be recycled. That’s how it worked when I done the papers anyway.
Ha, the famous cardboard and newspaper recycling scandal! A lot of it goes off to to be used as ballast on the cargo ships going back to china to get the ship to sit at the right depth for returning home. I don’t know what the Chinese do with it but I very much suspect it’s burned…
Good for the boys on landfill work and skips etc, bet they come away with some good bits n bobs?
Its frightening to think how much food gets wasted due to EU rules ( ), if you look in the produce section of most supermarkets, all the carrots etc etc look the same, any out of shape stuff is not for sale. What happens to that stuff? Does it go in processed food? Animal feeds?
All our stuff gets sold to sugarich who I believe turns it into pig feed. Only done the farm a few times and its a ■■■■ of a place.
Another load that we used to do (which was good management/recycling)
Was from a produce packing firm, they washed & prepared the veg/fruit for retail sale & the residue from the process ended up looking like wet sand/cake mix. We had a 40yrd bin under a conveyer that would take 3-4 days to fill (maxed out an 8 wheeler to 32 tons, you could get it to pull a wheelie whilst you was pulling the bin on Lol !)
We would take it to one of 3 Farms near Leighton Buzzard & it would be fed to the livestock.
Felt sorry for the Bullocks one day, when I saw them munching from a Troff of Onion peelings (nearly made me cry-lol)
Just goes to show, they really can turn Muck into Brass !
Isn’t feeding waste to pigs banned through out europe because of the risk of foot and mouth disease?

Even more wasteful however is that the number of papers sent to each store everyday is determined by the Publisher; so if they think they have a major news story and will sell extra copies, they will print extras, send the stores what they think the store should sell; any that aren’t sold are returned & sent for recycling; the store then gets billed for the number supplied, and a credit for the number returned.
I was on papers the night Michael Jackson died, the print got re-run 3 times, my truck was loaded & emptied twice - the pallets of printed papers all into the recycle bins. They finally let me go with my load, I was told later by the other drivers that they binned another reprint after I’d left.

I think you’re thinking of bovine spongiform encephalopathy. A disease spread by feeding cows brains and spines to other cows. Foot and mouth is a virus spread by close contact.

Don’t know, but this was definitely for the cows & probably any other animals that could eat it.
Thinking about it ! I think It’s uncooked food scraps like meat & fat that’s banned.
When I worked for Blake’s we had a regular job taking ten or a dozen pallets of cheese to a farm near Wincanton. The cheese was all wrapped in small packages just as they sell it in supermarkets and the pallets were well over a tonne each.
I asked what they did with it, and they told me that it was all out of date, and they re-processed it into cheese powder, to use as flavour on cheesy snacks like cheese and onion crisps.

No defo foot and mouth
Good job I became a lorry driver and not a vet then.
before the internet when ■■■■ wasnt as widely available as it is today 3 of us took 40ft containers of confiscated german ■■■■ mags to a secure disposal place in the midlands, we opened the back doors and stood and watched the customs men unload them all into the shredder, seemed a crying shame at the time, mind you it was pretty ■■■■■■■■ stuff that made ■■■■■■ seem like the Beano !

Yes and no.
I’m not quite sure of the full regs, but basically you can’t feed them catering waste i.e. leftovers which have been cooked.
Out-of-date vegetables are fine.
There is a growing pressure to have the rules changed; it’s only in the EU that this applies. Read more here;
