I would not employ a driver who would not and could not change a bulb FFS…
I would sooner have a guy who could use the fogs to get it back to base and workshops in the case of a headlight bulb, than one who would insist on me spending £350 minimum in getting DAF aid out… In case you think im being harsh, just take a look at the amount of cars on the road with blown bulbs, they all get pulled dont they??
And you guys wonder why wages are so poor, whiter than white and idiots to boot…
remind me not to use the DafAid in your area if that is what they charge

over the rest of the country, the standard DafAid call out fee for out of hours service is £128
do i take it that you willingly drop your trousers and bend over while they slip you a length?

sorry but if i came back to the yard, and handed in, an invoice for £133 for a £5 bulb,i would ask for my p45,why is there so much of,thats not my job!!,about these days■■?

Now move the scenario on a few hours, you’ve done your last drop and are about to turn the wagon around and head for home only to discover the number plate missing is anyone really going to wait there until a 100% legit plate arrives ? Not a chance.
Please read my post a little more carefully,I said that I would not wait until I had a 100% legit one,It does not say that I would return without a number plate,a cardboard numberplate is not 100% legit.
Personally speaking I’d have taken it out with a cardboard plate, got a new plate made up on route somewhere and in the event of a tug say i lost it on-route and I’ve put a temporary plate on till I can get somewhere to get another one.
tyler4164:
I even used my own car to go & pick up the new plate
Every insurance policy I’ve ever had has excluded using the vehicle for anything to do with work, other than travelling to or from it. I assume yours is the same so you are willing to drive a vehicle without insurance but not willing to drive without a number plate, VERY strange decision.

Top man Highlander. No-one else on here seemed to notice that contradiction (myself included).
As we’ve been told so often by the brave new breed “The law is the law” therefore what you are talking about could be tantamount to driving without adequate insurance!!
The Whiter-than-white brigade seem distincly silent lately.

Vehicle & Operator Services Agency
Categorisation of Defects
A registration plate missing/ broken/
incomplete/ insecure/ faded/ dirty/
deteriorated/ obscured. Letters or figures
incorrectly spaced or formed
“IN”
advisory defects not considered serious
enough to prohibit the vehicle. They are
reported on a Vehicle Inspection Notice
explained in the following paragraph.
Where Examiners find on a vehicle
roadworthiness defects not serious
enough to warrant prohibition, they will
advise the user/ owner using a Vehicle
Inspection Notice. This notice is advisory

I did say “I assume”.So very sorry,I didn’t realise you owned the business. You didn’t say that in the original post
You gave the impression you are an employee

As for me being a “smart ■■■”,I’m not.I got done years ago for this offence. It seems that you can call anyone names but they are not allowed to do the same to you, judging by your rant earlier.
no number plate refusing to move fair point, my number plate at the mo is wrote on the back of another 1 and has been like thats for about 3 months (TIN HAT)
i was once in the isle of grain at 2pm ish , and snagged my electric suzie, so checked my lights to find i had no sidelights only indicators an stop lights, friday afternoon, just enogh time to get home, so i goes 4 it, comin down the m57 just as it was getting dark, got back the yard just in time and home 4 a much needed pint in the local
(hides in nuclear shelter)
Do you think this guy could be id’d off his container number, if he commited an offence?

My insurance covers me for use in connection with my employer’s business in addition to my own personal business (if I had one). I’m not allowed, however, to use it for commercial travelling.
Just an update on this situation. I was working last week & i happened to meet two of the main transport guys from our company & was telling them about this. They both turned round to me & said i had done the right thing. Also i was given a card with their name & number on & to ring them if anything is wrong with the truck & i dont think its right to take it out. Or if anyone gives me any hassle because i wont take it out for any reason also to ring them.
5 pages on a number plate question!!
Get some cardboard. get a pen, get on with your job and get a life.
“Hello Jim, where are you?”
“I’m in Romania but I’ve broken down. Can you send DAF out to fix my truck.”
“What’s the problem?”
“I’ve lost my trailer plate”
“I’ll post you your P45, it will be cheaper”
no bloody wonder this country is on it’s arse.
it’s just as well we have the east europeans. at least they have a work ethic.
