Surely you wouldnt expect a guy to drive from Thornbury to Thatcham at night on a major motorway with only one headlight working■■? What if the other one went as well.
You wouldnt present a vehicle for an MOT with only one headlight so why expect a professional driver to drive it when he knows about the fault.
If a major blue chip firm like GIST havent got somebody on site to do a simple thing like change a bulb then thats thier own stupid fault…Dont blame the cost on the driver, hes just protecting his licence.
If the driver had took the vehicle then got stopped by VOSA or the Police and had ended up being fined I bet GIST would have turned round and said that the driver shouldnt have taken a vehicle with a defect out of the depot.
As for the number plate question…its your licence mate so its your choice as to how you protect it…i know its only a 30 quid fine for no number plate and not endorsable but I bet the company wouldnt have paid the fine for you if you had been stopped.
[/quote]
i shake my head in disbelief at some of the nutters on here.not take a truck out with a blown headlight bulb??,losing licences??,you wouldnt do it??.talk sense.like someone has already posted on here,im pretty sure given the circumstances vosa or the police WOULD appreciate a bit of “can do”.the bbc should start a new program"cant drive…wont drive",they could have a lot of takers judging by some comments of drivel posted.
lets get some facts right
1)has anyone been prosecuted for displaying a cardboard number plate?
2)has anyone lost their licence or even had points added for having a blown headlight bulb?(even though on can blow at anytime whilst on route(would you stop on the hard shoulder and refuse to drive?).
this week i have been in a vosa checksite for a weigh and my n/s headlight bulb has been inop since monday.they didnt say anything(it was switched on due to rain),and i forgot to replace my “spare” bulb last time i changed it,and i havent been near a garage this week.i will replace MYSELF at the first opportunity next week.next people will be refusing to take trucks out because a marker light is not working, its the same as a headlight bulb,it would still fail an mot.
im not condoning driving trucks with defects, anything more serious(ie air leak brakes etc)should obviously be attended to immediatley.
basically, headlight bulbs, trailer plates and other “MENIAL” defects should not boil down to stopping the job.
tyler, dont ask questions, then lambaste people for telling you their opinion, even if it"s not what you want to hear.you were in the wrong in my opinion.and we all dont drive for “blue chip companies” either, some are small firms on here as well .
one last question.if it was your own truck(as an owner driver),would you not take the load because of a missing trailer plate or blown headlight bulb(and loose the job)?.
As a get you home, with a blown headlight bulb, most trucks have a switch for headlight adjustment, drop it to its lowest setting and use main beam, if its a decent system and the truck is not arse heavy you wont dazzle others, its not rocket science (Il like that quote DDave ) Or just use the foglights, a lot of you use em anyway, coz its cool
You know I can see some on here refusing to take a trailer out cos one of the litle top markers has blown, suppose it will give the rest of the depots a laugh for a week or so…
Coffeeholic:
Faced with that situation in the past I’ve unscrewed the one from the unit and used that, faced with that situation in the future that’s what I will do again.
Another Gem from the all knowing… I’ll remember that for next time.
buck73:
has anyone been prosecuted for displaying a cardboard number plate?
I don’t know anyone who has been prosecuted for such an “offence”, but I’m sure the Whiter-than-White brigade can point to someone who has.
buck73:
next people will be refusing to take trucks out because a marker light is not working, its the same as a headlight bulb,it would still fail an mot
That’s the point people are missing. It’s all about the “degree” of “offence” committed. If people can’t tell the difference with someone using a cardboard number plate as a temporary repair and someone knowingly driving a truck with faulty brakes then in all honesty they shouldn’t be let loose anywhere near a truck.
Coddy:
You know I can see some on here refusing to take a trailer out cos one of the litle top markers has blown, suppose it will give the rest of the depots a laugh for a week or so…
I agree. They wouldn’t last two minutes as an OD.
switchlogic:
Oh my good god, we’re in agreement! You speak perfect sense here. Good man
I don’t have a problem siding with you when we are clearly of the same opinion Switch, and as Billy Bragg once sang “I’m sure that we can find some common ground”.
Listen to me quoting Billy Bragg. Not bad for a Daily Mail reader eh?
switchlogic:
I suppose you were technically right, but in my opinion a bit over the top. There seems very little can do attitude amongst drivers these days and if I was in the office when you rang I’d have probably just laughed at you.
Well at the end of the day im shocked at your attitude. I’ve been working on this contract sine july 08 & since then i havn’t had one day off sick or been late once. I always put 100% into my job so who are you to tell me i’m nothing but a jobsworth. As a proffesional driver its all about leading by example. Us proffessional drivers are supposed to set an example to other road users such as car drivers etc. If a car driver wishes to drive around with a light out it doesnt mean we as proffesionals have to do the same. I paid over £2500 for my class 1 & 2 & if theres anything wrong with the vehicle then i won’t drive it untill its sorted. If you are prepared to drive a vehicle in an un roadworthy condition then your the jobsworth in my opinion. How the hell do you warrent sending a driver home just for sticking to the letter of the law.
At the end of the day i wasn,t refusing to do my drops, they all got done all beit abit late & i had a longer day but the job got done. I even used my own car to go & pick up the new plate so as far as i can see i made all the effort i needed to do.
Why are you so worried about causing abit of fuss or upsetting the boss in order to stay legal, any boss who expects a driver to drive an unroadworthy truck aint worth worrying about. Its my licence at the end of the day!!!
& to add to it all the staff at my drops said i done the right thing.
I don’t care how many of you guys think i was over the top its what i think that matters. If it aint legal i don’t drive it simple as!!
Good god man, you asked a question, I answered it, now your having a hissy fit because I didn’t give the answer you wanted. Why do people like you post on here with these ‘was I right or wrong’ or ‘did I do the right thing’ style questions when they are so certain they did the right thing anyway and then get all arsey when someone disagrees with them. I don’t post daft questions because I’m happy with the way I do things and that’s good enough for me.
Just get over yourself and do the job the way you want, then we’ll all be happy!
Goodnight all.
I aint got a problem with you giving me your opinion but you have no right to call me abusive names or say im just a jobsworth who doesn’t want to do the job. For your information i put 100% into my work & the office staff at the main r.d.c have told me in the past that they wished more of their drivers were like me as it would make their jobs easier. They have alot of problems with other drivers not reporting defects on the trucks. You don’t know me from adam So fair enough give your opinion but keep the harsh name calling to your self!!!
Dazza:
Tyler, you started a thread with the title “Was I wrong or right”. You are now bad mouthing the ones who think you were over the top. WTF?
Bet your boss was jumping for joy when he had to “call in another company to take some drops off”.
What makes me laugh is the amount of “drivers” on here trying to equate a number plate made out of card (not missing) with faulty tyres, blown headlamps and so on.
Chester, there is breaking the law & breaking the law. Anyone who disagrees is implying that they never break the speed limit by just one mile per hour.
Answers to Tyler’s original post:
Made one out of cardboard. VOSA are the authorities, not the devil incarnate and IMO would more often than not appreciate a bit of “can-do”.
Right, but it does make you appear a bit like the schoolkid who sees a ■■■■■ mag being passed around class and tells the teacher.
The law states, “All vehicles manufactured after 1.1.1973 must display number plates of reflex-reflecting material, white at the front and yellow at the rear and the characters must be black.” There is no mention about plates made of cardboard.
He who is without sin…
As i’ve already said i aint got a problem with your opinion but names like [zb], jobsworth & comments like i just can’t be bothered to do the job are not called for. By all means give your opinion but leave the name calling out of it. You have no idea how i work day in day out so you have no right to make assumptions about that. The opinion i wanted was regarding the numberplate not what you think of me as an individual. Thankyou

I didn’t call you a [zb] and don’t remember anyone doing so, I just told you some harsh truths. This is Trucknet sunshine. People come from all backgrounds and have a variety of life experiences so if you are going to moan that people are being opinionated against you then as the saying goes: “If you can’t stand the heat…etc.”

Actually we do have some idea of how you work, for example:
tyler4164:
i start work at 05.15 every morning………………………….………………… i didn’t leave untill 10.00. All in all not a good start.
Four and three quarter man-hours lost, plus the cost of a subby to do the drops. Just totting it all up.
tyler4164:
They told me to make one using cardboard. I said (1) no because it was illegal & (2) as it was raining it would just fall apart anyway
Fall apart? How heavy is the rain in Bristol?
tyler4164:
i got the impression they thought i was being over the top
Whatever gave you that idea?
For Christ’s sake, we’re in a deep recession and we’ve got drivers refusing to drive trucks because of trivial issues whilst there are decent lads on the dole who would have loved to drive your truck complete with cardboard numberplate.

So i should be breaking the law because we’re in a recession & there are plenty of drivers out there who don’t care if they break the law or not…I don’t think so. I f you are willing to break the law then you shouldn’t be let loose in a truck.
What next, don’t worry about the nail in your tyre drive as all the rest of the tyres are ok so just carry on regardless, or the tread on the tyre is below the legal limit but i better be proffesional & carry on with my work as i don’t wanna lose man hours or f the job up!! You need to take a long hard look at yourself & consider if you should be driving a truck on our roads if thats your attitude to breaking the law.
Can’t believe some peoples attitude to breaking the law
You were wrong . If you can’t see why then there is no hope. The word brainwashing comes to mind. Th ank God I was driving in the days when men were expected to think for themselves. If you were in Spain or Italy for example what would you do■■? You are an example of the new breed of that there is no doubt.

FFS whats with all the what if’s. I wasn’t driving abroad i was in the uk. I wasn’t half way through a round i was at an outbase at the start of the day. No wonder so many companies end up on the wrong side of vosa etc etc. Yeah the new breed of drivers that do respect the law.

tyler, there is a huge difference between a blown bulb and a defective tyre and like mentioned above if you cant see that, then there is no hope.at the end of the day,if that was your attitude above in the posts, then you are a jobsworth, and to be honest,i think YOU need to consider that if you cant do temporary repairs or distinguish between what is safety related defects(with regard to the immediate risk posed to others) then it is you sir,who should consider a different career option.
or is it how you"ve made yourself look so far:
"im from the defect is a defect"brigade and its not going out no matter what.if i was your boss i would have sacked you.

You didn’t, but he came on here expecting us all to say “good on ya lad” and “that’s right, give them bosses hell”. The thing is most of us live in the real world and can see the difference between a minor fault and a truck with no brakes so he’s resorted to attacking thoses of us who acknowledge the hassle he’s caused.
