Any tips for someone who has never towed anything bigger than a caravan before?
I have a C+E (102) (Drawbar only) thanks to grandfather rights, having passed the old Class III many years ago, but I’ve only driven Class 2s, and I’ve just been given a job next week moving trailers.
So although I am “legal” to do this, having had no training I am a little nervous to say the least.
Never done W&Ds, never really wanted to tbh, but I reckon it wouldn’t be a problem driving and manoeuvring one.
I take my hat off to the guys on A frames, horrible ■■■■ things I reckon I’d be like an amateur on one when it came to reversing .
DickyNick:
W&D is generally easier. You’ve not got the head board/front corner of the trailer to worry about when doing a tight turn and hitting something. An artic is more manoeuvrable in a small yard as you can’t spin a W&D round in the spot in such a small space but having driven both I’d say overall W&D is slightly easier.
I would agree W&D is easier unless its an A frame trailer. I have seen experienced artic drivers making a complete hash of trying to reverse one.(can’t do it) They need far more practice than an artic unless your name is Carryfast then it just comes natural.
Mind you I have seen experienced artic drivers making a hash when reversing an artic.
How would you know snake you’ve never driven a truck in your life, your a do gooder anti truck fantasist you know it, we all know it as you always dodge any direct questions, keep dreaming with all your alias and we all know who they are to !!!

cowards or clever …drop the drag and nose it in with the pin on the cab.
trunking would make no difference…tramping on groupage, then never in a million years would i want the agony and impending disaster of roaming around in a drag.
in an artic you can get out of trouble easily enough compared to getting stuck somewhere in a drag.
With an A frame you will reverse into tight spaces that artics can not get into, this is after about six months of practising.
One good thing about them is, if you are unlucky or careless & jack knife it, you are going to be pretty unlucky for the trailer to take the cab out.
