Hi Carl, Do you still have your collection of Pirelli calendars? I can remember you getting one annually from the firm. They would be worth a bit now if you’ve still got them. Chris

Hi Christine,

Like you say I received every Pirelli calander, from the orriginal batch and each year put them up on the office wall and took them down at the end of the year ad put them in the bin. As they became collectors items I lived to regret my actions and kept the last one or two, but these were not the one’s worth the money.

The first, I remember was sent with a strong plastic frame where you hang the photos and then the calander underneath. How I wished I had kept that one. One year I remember they sent a spagetti making pack, which we couldn’t understand as at the time we thought spagetti came in a tin. I remember Susan, who I had not married at that time cooked the spagetti for us and both our parents, so we also had a meal out of Pirelli. I bet that spagetti making kit would have been worth a bit today as a collectors item.

On a brighter note. I have just had Barbara Pye, Geoffs daughter on the phone. Geoff is well, but unable to see much and waiting to go into hospital for a cataract operation

Carl

Hi Barbara & Carl,
What great news as i had left a couple of messages with you Barbara & not had a reply & your dads was switched off i thought the worst so fantastic news, i had spoken with Geoff a couple of weeks ago to arrange a visit but he was not too good not being able to get his breath so i cut the conversation short. I still intend to pop through & see him but will contact him first if its okay? He has not changed a bit on the photos & sure he will get better soon. I remember he had done a bit of judo like myself years ago so what is he doing a break fall?

On a nice note bye to you all - Gordon.

Barbara,
I know a few who has had the cataract OP & they were in & out of hospital in a crack.

Gordon.

My mam had both her eyes done last year and she was 86 and had no problems. Such a simple but life changing operation. Chris

My mam had this op done earlier this year all she said is that her eyes felt like they had been scratched for part of the day then has been fine eyes back to how they were

She is 19  & still dont wear glasses except for reading close up as she dont need them for everyday

Hi Carl
Snowballs !!! Thats a blast from the past. IIRC the parts vans were green and used to call weekly. Supplied shackle pins, king pins and other ’ consumables ’ One day the van pulled in to the yard and a few minutes later Mr Snowball followed him in with a brand new Wolsley 2200 automatic. Not sure if he was showing off his new car or following the van to see what business was like.
Do you know if the Bishop Auckland Snowballs were related to Snowballs the saddlers in Newcastle ■■?

Thats a blast from the past Tyneside, Bart J Snowball, I remember the shop well on Dean Street, When I worked for Baxters on the Quayside we use to deliver there with stuff from Rutherglen, Regards Larry.

Hi Tyneside and Larry,
Snowball’s are still going in Railway Street Bishop Auckland. Old Syd had been about probably since the twenties as he dealt with my Grandfather. From my memory he lived in a very large house, opposite the entrance of Asda at Bishop Auckland which he had named ‘Bedford lodge’. The house is still there, and I pass it as I travel into Bishop Auckland on the train and it is semi derelict and overgrown now.
Bedford Lodge had several out buildings and a lot of land where he stored larger parts and dealt in ex-army Bedford RL’s and Land rovers. We in fact bought a RL from him which we kept at our site at Green Lane and used for snow ploughing and pulling out our vans when they got stuck on ice and snow. It certainly earned its keep doing this, often towing artics up and onto the A1 at Thinford. One of our apprentice coach painters painted and lettered it. I think it had been one or two Bedfords put together, and was a bit rough, but it was ideal for what we wanted.
Once again Tyneside we have had similar experiences as Snowball’s van called on us once a week in the late sixties early seventies. I am sure it was driven by Syd’s son, but I don’t remember his name. We always bought something off him as it was handy him calling. I lost touch when we moved to Green Lane and I didn’t notice him coming, but I think he still did for several years.
I think Syd dealt in the cheaper end of the ex MOD market as we bought the RL Bedford we converted into a breakdown from Vas of Amphill Bedfordshire, and it was in excellent condition. We also bought the Harvey Front Crane new from Vas.

Eddy,
I did not know you had a brother was he handsome too?
Was he into Haulage & did i know him?

Gordon.

Your photo on your site with Keith McCrone i wonder is Alan McCrone his son who worked with me @ Watson’s Carriers in the 60s, as Alans son is/was a very good boxer from the Spennymoor club.
Gordon

I have just found this photo of myself and Frank Morgan taken about 30 years ago standing behind ENK 306 1938 Bedford 30cwt van.
Looking at the photo I certainly, and suspect Frank, wish we were both as thin as that today, and with the same amount of hair. Looking at Frank, when I saw him at the reunion, and myself when I see the sight of myself when I occasionally catch my reflection in a mirror, realise how time has been so unkind to us both.
Although I am pleased I got rid of that ghastly moustache

Hi Gordon…My brother David worked in the pits nearly all his life except for National Service (Navy) and about five year at Black & Decker after which he was so sick of the place he retuned to the PITS…Keith McCrone son is Colin, the boxing lad is related somewhere down the line, the horse we are on was dolly Jackie Broomfields old horse, Jackie was Keith’s Uncle the field is now all the house’s in St Andrews Road, they where brilliant times, we both learnt the basics of driving in that field as Keith’s other Uncle’s Ozzy and Joe used to bring old scrap cars to the yard and we would drive them round the field until they were scrapped, wish I had some of them now,Ausins,Morris,Alvis,Ford Pilot,Standard Vanguard allsorts it was like we had died and gone to the Dodgems in the Sky  ,Ho bye the way between me and my brother, I would say I was the better looking, then again if he was still here,I’m sure he would say the opposite    .

Gordon

Hi Gordon, Alan McCrone who worked with you at Watson’s was born in April 1950 and his son was also called Alan. His full name was Alan Stuart McCrone and he was born in 1977 and as you so rightly said he was a decent boxer from the Spennymoor Boxing Club. I think Alan Snr. and Keith were cousins. Hope that clears thing up for you. Regards Ronnie.
