VOSA checkpoint

Scarab:
We had a driver stopped about 2 weeks ago. Took about an hour as they gave it a good going over, found no faults. We were on a timed delivery for a customer and it made the load 5 minutes late and miss the slot, ended up getting tipped 4 hours later.

As has been said, VOSA don’t provide the driver any paperwork to say he’s been stopped. We get fined £120 by the customer for being late and they wont waive the fee as we have no supporting documentation for the load to be legitimately late.

Good eh?

Call vosa, explain when stopped and location, say you have waited for copey of pg35ec to arrive in post.
One should be given to driver and one sent to operator.

unfortunately my truck is well known to vosa :frowning: . not thru me or my boss I hasten to add. the previous owner went bust and during his struggle to stay afloat let the truck go a bit. he got a lot of grief from vosa I believe. its the first time I have been pulled in it and thankfully had just come out of service the day before so there was nothing wrong with it. until he waggled my trailer mudguard and it fell off in his hand! I was mortified! an old repair had let go. he said I could make a temporary repair with a ratchet strap which I did. he was satisfied it was safe to travel and let me go.
he still gave me a prohibition though! and a cancelation. all in all the trailer was prohibited for 4 minutes!
I work for a small operator and he was a bit ■■■■■■ off because it puts a black mark on his o license.
just seemed a little petty to be dishing out a notice for an offence that wasn’t there until he got his heavy handed mitts on it :imp:
the mudguard was repaired the next day btw :sunglasses:

i bought a truck that the previous owner had to sell, as VOSA told him in no uncertain terms that he would never hold an O Licence again, and when his father in law applied, it went to tribunal and the f-i-l was told that it would only be granted if the other man had absolutely nothing to do with the truck, could not drive it, maintain it or even wash it, that is how severe the original owners offences were :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

i bought the truck, put it on the road, and was expecting to receive quite a bit of unwanted attention from the VOSA roadside checks department, but, nothing :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

i had the truck for nearly 2 1/2 years, and it didn’t get tugged once

only been pulled twice in ten years and both times they were as nice as pie to me. ive only been driving this one six months. hopefully I shall not be bothered for a while now.

I used to get pulled in at Dover at least once a week because I bought a truck off a lad who did Swiss. After the umpteenth time I asked the C&E bloke and he said it was flagged because the prev owner had been pulled for bringing excessive amounts of baccy in. £250 later and a private plate sorted that.

there is one thing i took away from it though. i now have a new company policy which means i will not leave a clients site without spare bulbs. i could have been looking at a PG9 and fine for a tail light blowing during a trip and for the sake of a 50p bulb, i am not willing to risk it when i know ■■■■ well that no operator would pay the fine but at the same time, i dont see why i should supply bulbs which are of no use to me after i knock off after a shift

The thing about VOSA checkpoints is the first thing that is done is the attitude test. Go in with a good attitude and you’re in for a fairly easy ride even if they find something (within reason).

As for the bulb, as long as you can prove you did a walk round check at the start of that day’s duty you’ll not get a fine and will get told just to get it fixed. Many companies will give you a check sheet to complete and just show them that. If you can’t show them one then you’re in a bit more of a sticky patch especially if you’re one of those ■■■■ ends who put their card in when they’re about to set off so can’t even show 10/15 minutes “other work” at the start of the shift which would prove a walk round check.

“When did you do your walk round check?”

“At the beginning of my shift”

“There’s nothing on the tacho to show it”

“I just put it in when I set off”

“So you’ve made a false record then…”

I got pulled at Shropshire a couple of months ago and after a clean check got a piece of paper to show if I got stopped again, can’t remember how long it was valid for. I used to get pulled more often than not when I drove foreign regd trucks to the point that I just took it for granted, but last month was the first time for about 3yrs (UK truck) and I did notice the check was not quite as thorough.
