i also drove a i shift demo last week. excellent gearbox
our 2 only do 85 k i wondered if that was because of the box
Mine will do 90k so don’t think it is anything to do with the box more just the speed limiters on the two you have.
jon boy 100:
i surprised neil has an i shift.i would have stuck to the 14 speed manual for long haul work.or is so he can drink his coffee and drive
I can drink coffee and drive regardless of the type of box. I went for the i-box because I’m quite happy to let it change the gears as it does a good job and saves me fuel.
i am surprised the gearbox saves you as much fuel as you say, i imagine you spend most time in top cog.have you had a different final drive ratio fitted on this one.also is the power the same as your last motor.
our series 1 380s give better mpg than our 2
s.
but ours are working hard compared to yours.
what ved do you pay on 31 t. we had some 4x2 downplated to 32.5 t but i cant remember the ved.
enjoy your trip to bella italia
jon
Everything on this vehicle is the same as the last except for the gearbox and the slightly different shaped cab. It even pulls the same trailer on the same work. The VED on 31t is £165 and 31t also saves me a large chunk on the insurance premium as well, no point paying for something I don’t need.
I’ve enjoyed it so far but am loading at this minute for the homeward leg.

I forgot one other difference between this truck and the last, this is Euro 3 and the last was Euro 2.
Fwiw, in case you’ve forgotten, I think the I-shift is a bad of zedbee. Definitely an old-mans gearbox. The EPS box on the Actros is way better imho. However, I can’t compare other auto boxes because I’ve never driven them.

Careful Rob, that’s bordering on personal attack but I’ll let it stand as it really says more about you than anything else.

Nows theres a first sombody with somthing good to say about a merc autotrans
Personally as I’m spending my own money & dont earn anything when the motor is in the workshop I wont even be considering a merc.(I’d rather have an iveco & thats saying somthing)
JONBOY@RH:
i may be wrong craig but cant you leave the roof mounted a/c on all night without the engine running? that would be a big attraction for me on euro work
spot on
Coffeeholic:
Craig, the roof mounted a/c would be in addition to the a/c that comes with the vehicle and would be used when parked
I was wondering if you could use them when running as well,no point in paying for air con twice, there is another subbie with one on his magnum I shall ask him.If you can I wont spec (or delete option it) from the manufacturer as they seem to charege in the region of £1200 - £1400
coffeeholic:
From looking into details about them they can be run when the vehicle is stopped for up to 8 hours without needing the engine running. They work by spraying a fine mist into the cab, so fine that nothing gets wet, which lowers the temperature some 10 degrees below the ambient temp. If you see a vehicle with one fitted you will find that there is a large plastic container on the back of the cab, outside, something similar to a windscreen washer bottle. Pipes lead to the roof mounted unit from here and I guess as well as stopping for diesel you will have to stop to fill up with water.
correct I’m not sure if the time limit is due to the tank capacity (in which case I’m sure you could get a bigger tank) or elctrical useage (to save the batteries)
I think the limit is an electrical one. I would still keep the standard a/c for during the day as it is a delete option on the Volvo’s and is also climate control rather tahn a/c so is used to keep the cab at your chosen temp regardless of whether that is cold or warm. I think the roof mounted ones just cool.
I shall ponder that one
the most popular make seems to be viessa but i cant find a web site for them
Found this and this (click on products then choose Trucks) little bit of info on the roof mounted a/c units that are becoming more popular.
