Using water when cant get ad blue is it a myth

Wheel Nut:
Other stories I heard about is the AdBlue dosing pump will burn out if it is run dry.

I would have thought that if the vehicle can tell there is no more adblue and reduce the poor it would stop trying to pump adblue through.

Too simple :stuck_out_tongue:

I wanted a classic car. I might buy a smokey routemaster bus instead, who cares about a bit of soot?

Hombre:
Water certainly works in a 2007 DAF 105 without any ill effect, a guy I worked for recently insisted that we use only water.

Im told thought that it wont work in the 2008 models - dont know why.

Correct it will work on the 2007 but not on the 2008 models as one chap found out at work.

stvme2519:
is it a myth our true you can use water if till you can get your hands on ad blue

A truck built pre nov. 2007 does not have a nox sensor fitted so it doesnt know if you run out of ad blue. The pump will try to spray regardless and eventually burn out but as you weren using it anyway its no loss. Just be carefull on two things
1-a traffic cop will check your ad blue gauge for compliance and
2-your local dealer may fit a nox sensor without telling you

Can you still drive if the adblue has run out or can it harm the engine?

The vehicle still runs, but according to the manual (haven’t had it run out yet) to keep to legal requirements the engine runs at about 60% power.

This is true for vehicles made in 2008, and may become true for older ones too. I’ve been told that my 2006 euro5 DAF will be reprogrammed at some point (already has a NOX sensor) to go into limp-home mode when the ad-blue runs out, right now, it doesn’t do that.
In Germany, to get the euro 5 reduction on the MAUT, you have to have ad-blue in the tank, or if the BAG gets you, you’ll face a huge fine.

Note to self.

  1. remove nox sensor.
  2. don’t go to germany.
  3. don’t get caught.

On my volvo this time last year i had to put water in as no adblue available to buy, but now most places stock it ,
If there was still a bit left in the tank i could put a couple of litres of water in which would give me another 160 kms to find some (my volvo does about 85 kms on 1 litre of adblue)
But if the tank was empty and pure water was added the nox sensor would pick this up and the engine would derate from 520 hp to 300 hp 40% i think at the next time i stoped or as the dash warning would say (high emisions engine will derate at next stop)
And as skids say the cheapest place to buy it is AS24 in France 30p a litre cheaper than the UK   ripoff britain again.

Its an offence to run without it

They’re going to have to expand the addblue network.

Was watching Discovery the other weekend, programme about the manufacture of the new BMW straight 6 diesel engine, apparently, it uses something new on the market called Urea solution, that is injected into the exhaust after the catalytic converter.

Would this be called addblue?

greencar.com/features/bmw-diesels/

Extract from article
To fully comply with emission standards in California and other U.S. states, BMW uses selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology to handle NOx emissions. Called BluePerformance, it incorporates an oxidation catalyst placed just downstream of the exhaust manifold, a diesel particulate filter (DPF) housed in the same unit, and an SCR catalyst incorporating urea injection. In addition to filtering out even the smallest particles from the exhaust gas, this combination ensures effective reduction of nitric oxides (NOx) by way of a chemical reaction within the exhaust system. This reaction is initiated by the injection of a small dose of urea, or “AdBlue.” AdBlue is already widely used in Europe. The ammonia generated within the SCR catalyst converts nitric oxides into benign nitrogen and water vapor.

I don’t like adblue, it tastes awful, would rather stick with Meths!

VOSA are dipping adblue tanks to check the quality/strength of the mixture, so if you are running just water then maybe the time to nip up the old ■■■■ and get your excuses right, if there is one

Do you have details of this?

I’m running a 57 plate R500 scania just now an it gets filled with water, run out completely last night an it didnt drop any power so i’m assuming its all good. Its a rental anyway so who cares!!!

So there is truth in the rumour that you can use the ad blue tank as a toilet then, well that will save using the MSA`s parking area.

adblue is a corrosive so watch what u touch

Hi all hope this quote from BLUE CAT ad blue solutions helps kill off this use water myth. First time I have ever posted so hope it helps.

What happens if I run out on the road?
Your vehicle’s tank will normally contain up to two weeks supply of AdBlue and, provided the tank is topped up at the depot weekly, drivers will not normally need to fill-up on the road.

Drivers may want to carry a small 10 litre plastic container of AdBlue on the vehicle in case they run-out… enough for about 400 miles of driving. Learn more

For trucks registered after October 2007 an on-board-diagnostics vehicle sensor will ensure that genuine AdBlue is present in the special tank. If AdBlue runs-dry, the Engine Management System will progressively and gradually reduce engine power by 50% to a limp-home mode over the space of 100 Km distance.

my mate was driving a 57 plate daf recently…the adblue tank gauge dropped to just below a quarter and a warning light for the exhaust system came on and the power dropped right off…45mph if he was lucky!!
remembering that adblue is just a mix of urea and water he tipped the contents of his 2 bottles of water into the adblue tank…and low and behold…he got the power back and the warning light went off…at his next stop he added another couple of litres of water which lasted him to the end of his shift…not the best thing to do really?but he only thinned the mix down a bit to get him back?

Our Mercs suffer damage if water is put in.There are big warning stickers everywhere. We were carrying a 10 litre drum of Adblue with us in case we ran out.But it turns out Adblue only has a 6 month shelf life then it returns to a solid state. We have had a few problems with that. Also as you turn off the system is supposed to purge itself as Adblue is highly corrosive.Systems blocked exhausts rotted through doesnt fill you with confidence.I prefer the Scania EGR system that doesnt need Adblue. But the engine does feel a bit strangled.

You better tell the manufacturer that and the laboratory that prepared the SDS

The only warning I can see is to wash your hands, I do that after having a ■■■■ too

I,m going off the solid lump of adblue that was in a container and the exhaust system with lumps of rust and adblue in it .That was sat there waiting for Merc to collect it.The mercs loose power with no adblue.

When my ad blue tank starts to get low I get an annoying mono-tone female voice tell me every time I start the engine if tank running low.

She goes…

Warning adblue tank at 25% replenish when possible (% changes everytime you start engine again if it got even lower)

And when it has run dry the annoying mono tone lady says….

Attention Adblue has been depleted engine efficiency has been compromised, replenish when possible

Adblue is not corrosive its 83% water, just wash your hands afterwards :exclamation:
