He would only have known if there were signs or he was familiar with the area 
I would guess he wasn’t familiar with the area, and we know from the article that there aren’t any signs apart from advisory signs, and how often have you seen them and know they are only there to stop trucks spoiling the tranquility even though the route is perfectly adequate for any vehicle, also the ones that are there may be at the point of no return?
