many of the things you say are very true but one point stand out
we sure did learn the roads, unlike the sat nav moron who can not even remember the way out of a place that the sat nav took them to, we always remembered our way home
Oh what utter crap. I’ve not used paper maps for over a decade now other than the Philips Low Bridge Height map. I’ve learnt the way to plenty of places in that time. I can still go to a place maybe once or twice and find my way there again without a Satnav after that. Difference is the first couple of times I do it unlike you I’m not putting the lives of everyone in the immediate vicinity of my truck at risk by trying to read a well out of date A to Z whilst trying to drive the truck at the same time.
Talking of out of date you should take a look inside the front page of some of your A to Zs and see when they were first printed. It might frighten you just how old they are. I use Google Maps for my Satnav and it already has the new junction layouts for the A1 at Catterick on it as well as the opened part of the re-routed A1M from Leeming Bar to Scotch Corner as you can see here by the fact the road overlayed over the satellite imagery doesn’t match. Does yours even show the bit of motorway they opened from the A168 to Leeming Bar?

i will give you the point about google maps as its a great tool you can even check out streets or lanes for access it is indeed a good tool and does help
as for sat navs your talking out of your backside, there a danger and a distraction, and drivers have come to depend on them which is where the real danger is
i dont remember putting anyones lives at risk using maps or a - z ? i think your being a bit melodramatic there but it sounded good
just how the hell do we get around before the sat nav ? as its clear transport would stop now a days without them.
but then i can understand now just why the haulage industry doesn’t need to pay decent wages out, as why should they drivers do not need the skills they once needed. the trucks almost drive themselves and they can certainly find there way around without a human brain needed it would seem.
OMG!! i can’t believe people are still going on about how they could get around without sat navs and cameras etc…cavemen!!
Wake up, technology is here, to stay and IF yes IF used correctly all of it is a great AID to drivers, you are forgetting the sheer amount of traffic on the roads now compared with 5 years ago let alone 10 or 15 !! come on talk sense…there will always be idiots who misuse things and there always have…
but if you insist on saying we are all some sort of lower class drivers just because we use the tech available then i really have to say your talking out of the wrong hole!!
Traffic alerts alone are a huge benefit…my sat nav updates constantly and i can CHOOSE to take a different route USING my BRAIN funny enough or stay on route if i know there is dangers or props etc elsewhere…
I am sure all drivers can glance at a blind spot camera the same as way as they can a mirror before turning and if it helps …WINNER…it aint rocket science please STOP taring us all with the same brush as the idiots !!!

how dare you i am shocked at such a rude comment
i think it would be a good idea if firms charged drivers for electric used if they must use a sat nav, also have commodes fitted in the drivers seat which would improve efficiency and set a minimum wage of say 8 quid an hour for sat nav drivers who can only drive autos and 15 quid an hour for real drivers.

Well I can recall with some clarity the fact that when you used to see a truck weaving about the road as it was driving through town it wasn’t because they were on their mobile phone because hardly anyone had one at the time but because they were trying to read a map and drive at the same time.
You keep living in the past and doing the job the same old dinosaur way you’ve always done it. It just means one more job available for someone who has progressed with the times.
And as a final point Pete, don’t ask a driver with a Satnav for directions. I’d hate for you to be a hypocrite as well as an old fossil.
I can drive any manual including the old ones and get around without any modern gizmo but being intelligent i choose to make proper use of technology …
its called change…moving on… etc etc . don’t recall hearing surgeons saying they don’t need micro cameras and robotics to save lives ," should be banned " a good old scrub up and a sharp knife is all i need !!! Christ help us !!! thankfully some of us do “move on”
When you reply to this use a blackboard and chalk see how many people you can reach

yes but have you ever taken a dump in the cab that is the question ?
if they want to make things better for drivers then put a commode in the drivers seat and make the boss have to pay for bog roll instead of auto boxes and sat navs give the drivers something that can really help them when there out on the road stuck in tail backs
call me old fashioned all you wish but the fact remains sat navs are a real distraction and should be banned from use whilst driving just like a mobile phone.
If anyone put a karzi in my cab, it would come straight out. If you can’t control your bowel or are to lazy to get to a public toilet, you’re in the wrong job
