Unsociable drivers

pete-b:
‘…And that’s the problem … drivers sitting listening in. Have you ever tried to start an interesting conversation with a fellow driver…?’

I’m aiming this at no-one, but I once read that it’s sometimes best to be thought of as a fool than open ones gob to prove it.

if only they would let us all stay in our trucks and get some quality rest these drivers rooms are a joke thank god for a spare key

I haven’t been driving as long as many on here but I find you go into say an RDC and not many chat or say hello or you go into a truck stop and everybody has a table by there selves apart from the bloke that wants to say he makes more than you even though he prob dosen’t even in my owen company some drivers pull up at night and shut the curtains and won’t talk.

Can anybody shed some light on this for me as i find the few that will talk i learn alot from and atleast have a laugh with

 I always had a laugh and a joke with anyone, until they got boring…Then I used to insult them to see how far I could get without them twigging
Those who gave it all the hard man rubbish, I just acted gay, that got rid of them.
Those who gave it all the large regarding money, I just took the ■■■■ so much, that they would give up.

At the end of the day I take nothing seriously and come across as such, it makes for a more relaxing time of it all…Life is what you make it…I make mine entertaining by being whomever I want to be at any given time :grimacing:

“If you don’t mind, I’d like to tell you how I let Jesus into my life…”
Usually gets rid of the ‘wrong’ sort.

you could tell them your a jov witness that will clear any room in 5 secs flat

I think most drivers are scared to say anything just in case they bump into the bloke with the tin of corned beef in his bag, younger drivers will have to look up Jasper Carrot :stuck_out_tongue:

Thank Allah for that. I thought I was the only one to watch him! :stuck_out_tongue:

I’ve used the corned beef in a bag quote a few times over the years and it is mostly met with blank looks.

I agree, but, to slam others for not talking about a subject " interesting " enough for you to join in, is a bit off, most people in all walks of life just chat about the ordinary day to day things, granted, most drivers in rdc’s do talk bollox. So if other people feel so superior, do as others do, lock yourself away in your cab ( if you can ) or just sit and stare at a wall.

I must say that recentley i have found my self becoming less social when imm on the road the reason being that when ever i start socalizing with other drivers they have a tendencie to do nothing but moan about the job , hours , menoey ect ect now personally i mm not iterested in all that as it brings you down so i keep my self to my self

That’s it exactly. All you hear is moans about things that aren’t really that big a problem. One way to stop them is to ask when they are leaving the job, it confuses them as they have no intention of leaving and usually gets them to STFU.

I got another observation.Often when I am approached by some British driver, they earlier or later push the conversation in the direction which allows them to ask me what I am earning… I learned to just tell them my earnings are enough for my needs, as telling the true was often not the best idea…

I guess they just look for the opportunity to confirm their beliefs that Poles earn less to blame them for lowering the salaries or to make themselves feel better that there are still some people who earn less?

That’s because it isn’t funny… :unamused: Jasper Carrott isn’t funny. Never was and never will be.

I’m with you there Rob

‘… Jasper Carrott isn’t funny. Never was and never will be…’

‘Funky Moped’ was well received when it came out and coincided with being liberated by motorised wheels at age sixteen.

I recall it’s B-side (‘Magic Roundabout’) causing an adolescent titter when we should have been swotting for O-levels during the glorious, Watneys Red Barrel & Worthington E fuelled evenings of Spring/Summer of '76 as we raced from pub to pub like a squadron of well choreographed wasps in a cake shop.

Every day was Christmas - except for the hormonal imbalance, having no money and gagging to lose that dratted cherry.

Why don’t you just make something up and say your basic is 33.5k, but with overtime you can easily earn 40k and then go on to say that anyone who accepts a wage for less is letting the haulage industry down and pushing the wages down.

My CB packed up recently and this is the precise reason why I haven’t replaced/had it fixed.

They don’t believe me if I say anything over 5.75 per hour

But once they approached me when I was checking my hours to see if I am paid OK.

Two guys sat next to me and started to talk laudly, pretending that they speak between themselves, but it was obvious that they are winding me up. “Oh, poor boy, he has to work for the kind of money we would never rise our bums from bed etc”.

I just went angry and ask what they drive. They were both very proud of their DAFs XFs with containers. I asked them what they earn. They said they get 560 per week, flat.

I then pointed for my low cab DAF CF and said “this is mine and this is my last pay slip” and gave them one when I had 625 take home. “Our class one drivers earn about 1/3 more than me”.

They soon took their coffes and left the cafe.

They don’t need to know, that this 625 was an exceptional week and that we don’t have any class 1 lorries in our company.

So yes, you right, it’s working and I guess my pay slips from my current work would work even better, but I just can’t see the point of winding people up with no reason, as if they see I earn more driving small vans than they do driving lorries, they are not happy. And I don’t want anyone to be unhappy  So unless someone is really annoying I just tell them I earn enough. But I carry one pay slip with me which is very good, just in case

This was all covered recently in the miserable drivers thread. I like my own company. I’ll always be polite but like others I’m not interested in some boring conversation for and hour that goes round in circles when I could be reading and using my time constructively. I don’t judge other people who like talking rubbish to each other but on this forum people keep calling people like me miserable or unsociable. It’s just the way I’m am, we’re all different. I also hate running with people. Everybody seems to stop for coffee far too much! I like to push on through to four and a half.

That’s why I ignored you at Holyhead 2 weeks ago, and let you be.

Remember what your dear old mom used to tell you…“.Speak when spoken to!”
Use the advice daily. :sunglasses:
