Hi Meritor, on the Departed Hauliers of Southampton one of the blokes has put on a photo of ERF fleet number 721, this was one of the two units that worked out of Bow Common Lane doing a night trunk changeover with Liverpool. Jimmy Burge and George Ripley were the two drivers. With regard to the lorry in the tunnel, I only remember that the wagon was being washed at the time of collapse and by the time I was employed at the tunnel, it had all been repaired with no trace of the hole . Regards, Bill S

Hello Meritor,
 Thanks for the photo of the Invincible. How many grillion miles we did in those units I’ll never know.At the time, they were the best motors to do Liverpool etc.,the other option was a Thames Trader with a Scammell coupling-not a lot of fun with a York high trailer on.Liverpool was a night’s work as they weren’t noted for their pulling power, especially climbing up from Keele!
Keep the photos coming,it’s nice to see them and evoke the odd memory.Regards to all,900X20.

hi mate,i worked for geo.davies&son then part of the vesty group out of tilbury from 1977. in 1978/9 we moved to warley just before the drivers strike.there was a firm down the road called waljons and they did a bit of our repalrs until our own workshop started, by the way that union tractor was parked in the workshop and never moved until we moved out in about 1988.in 1982 a new contract started for johnson-scanstar/bluestar line/ liner shipping, joe palmer was the manager assisted by jim mcbarron all containerised by then
cheers steve.

Hi,my good mate tells me this old ERF of Ritsons was an old UCC motor and asked me to pop it on here.

Taken in Avonmouth about 1980ish…please excuse the crappy quality :frowning:

Hi Meritor, the only time that we pulled two trailers out of BCL was when we were going to Tilbury docks. We never had a second man on that run and we booked five miles per hour on the trip. The photo that you have put on site was probably taken after the vehicles were sold, as I do not recall the driver or area where it was taken. Regards, Bill S.

Hello Meritor, and all the UCC drivers,
Thanks again for the photos, the Scanias especially, they were my home away from home when on the Continent. They were a bit of a worry sometimes though as they were fitted with silly little Good Year
cross ply tyres which weren’t up to the job and punctures were quite frequent  ( I had four all in one day and with two spares, problems arose)I’m trying to get some more photos to put on the thread and if successful,I’ll post 'em.Regards to all,900X20.

Hi all,did you notice above the old berna lorry an advert saying keatings thats not me but an advert for keatings bug powder, that was my nick name at school. Terry

Hi 900x20.
the reason that our Scanias were fitted with cross ply tyres was for the following. According to our cheif engineer Len Dodge we were operating at the maximum use for cross ply tyres and though we argued for radials, he said that they would give us a higher roll over risk with hanging meat ,if used. That was the reason given. Bill S

Hello Bill,
I think there must have been another reason for the small tyres as to me, his theory was crap! Didn’t he know that some of the lorries on the continent were carrying hanging meat too:and they were on at least 10.00X20’s or up to 12.00x20 and there were not a lot of them turned over by the roadside! I don’t think he ever did a two week trip as we did sometimes otherwise he would have stipulated sensible tyres. And what about hanging beef on a Thames Trader (Scammel coupling)with the York box connected? They stayed upright! No,I think there was an ulterior motive re. the tyre supplier!
Anyway regards to you all from Ted. :unamused:
