Well-spotted that man! A number of Patโ€™s articles were re-hashed and produced in booklet form by TRUCK & DRIVER in 1994. It was produced in conjuction with Mercedes-Benz (UK) Ltd and most of the photographic illustrations showed new state-of-the-art SKs - mostly โ€˜faceliftโ€™ ones. The two exceptions were a picture of a truck on its side in the snow, so that had to be a Volvo F10 (soโ€™s not to make MB look bad) and a picture of an ERF C-series driving in fog (because you wouldnโ€™t want to be taking an SK out in bad weather  ). Having said all that, it was an excellent publication in its day and worth every penny at ยฃ8.99! Robert

Anyone know about twin splitter up shift brakes ,can I take one off a other gear box and swap it for mine ,is it just un bolt and bolt back in or is there some rocket science involved ,itโ€™s got air to it but iam struggling to engage gear from standing and the clutch is fully adjusted ,any advice appreciated .

From what I remember with the Twin Splitter clutch brake, when you activate the button by fully depressing the clutch pedal the air supplied to the clutch brake is a pulse of air for .45 of a second. So if there is any drag on the clutch the g/box will start to turn again very shortly afterwards. So you need to try and engage your gear as soon as you have hit the c/brake button. Colin.

colinwallace, thanks for that, your right it is,nt a continuous stream of air emited from valve, looking at my original post i did,nt mention that, sorry for that Dan.

One way to test the brake is: With the vehicle running, get the vehicle rolling very slowly ( 1-2mph) and fully depress the clutch. You should feel a slight jolt as the clutch brake attempts to slow down the gearbox momentarily. This can be done in neutral if on a slight slope. Colin.

HI DAN YOU COULD ALSO HAVE A TWISTED PRIMARY SHAFT I,VE HAD THIS PROBLEM IN THE PAST WHEN I WAS A FITTER , GENERALLY WITH THE HIGHER POWERED ENGINES,WHEN YOU ENGAGE THE CLUTCH BRAKE BECAUSE THE PRIMARY SHAFT HAS A TWIST IN IT THE CLUTCH ITSELF DOES.NT DISENGAGE PROPERLY AND IT FIGHTS AGAINST THE CLUTCH BRAKE CAUSING THE GEARBOX TO KEEP TURNING THUS GRINDING THE GEARS

Once the heads back on ,iam going to treat my self to a organic clutch and take it from there ,thanks for all the replies .

Dan, I had thought about growing Organic Clutches on thโ€™allotment next year. I would gladly have let you have a couple but Iโ€™m told that, like cabbages & sprouts, they are very susceptible to Club Root Disease. Just in case my crop fails and to save you waiting for spares until next autumn, I think youโ€™d probably be better off obtaining one from a more usual source. Sorry about that, but the thought was there!

Have you been on the crop produced in the loft again Rof ?

I really canโ€™t think where you would have got such a ridiculous idea.

Pass the lighter, please.

Donโ€™t recall the twin splitters, nor the clutch brakes giving a moments trouble on any the fleet of F90 MANโ€™s i drove, nor the previous roadrangers but those did need to be adjusted up now and again.

They were thrashed mercilessly by all of us at speeds we wonโ€™t discuss here, some good and lots of not so good (me) drivers played tunes galore on the gears, as well all did till we sussed 'em out, but i donโ€™t recall a single failure, and we made regular use of the clutch brakes, the workshop lads must have know their stuff cos they always worked spot on.
