Trucks Keep Britain Rolling

Nobody or anybody would give a second thought about drivers at the minute, or anytime past or present
Has anybody read or heard anything anywhere about the brilliant job the truck drivers are doing
Not on your Nelly, you could be the last people left working and we still won’t get a thought

I sometimes wonder why I bother with you bunch of dismal jimmies.

Seems to me some of you would find a downside if you won the lottery. No wonder nobody wants to come into this trade any more.

I don’t seek applause, medals or even praise; just acceptance from the wider public that we do a crappy, difficult and sometimes dangerous job with long hours and relatively poor rewards.

In what form do you want the acceptance?

Probably the same as you and everybody else. We used to be viewed as “knights of the road”, nowadays we’re treated as the scum of the earth. Before anyone says owt, I know that in certain ways, some drivers have brought that upon us by their own actions (regardless of which country they were born in) but nevertheless we as a “trade” seem to suffer a far worse degree of public misunderstanding and misconception than many others.

As for farmers; well I work amongst them and I can tell you they feel the same way. I suggested the re-introduction of something akin to the “Trucks Keep Britain Rolling” slogan in a similar vein to the campaign which has recently been promoted by the agricultural industry in Wales (you see the stickers on the side of sileage bales) with considerable success, with the aim of making the British public more aware that they are a vital part of the economy.

Of course drivers moan; many years ago when I started out at the bottom of the management ladder, I recall my old gaffer telling me that when drivers STOP moaning it’s time to worry!

I honestly don’t see the scum of the earth thingy, granted I don’t have a normal driving job, I go to the docks once a month and load from a few other places a month then mostly all own account internal movements.

1 of 2 places I go on the docks, the guy is a massive ■■■■, other than him having no patience when telling you where to go that’s all I’ve had off him, but seen others treated worse. But he’s a ■■■■, he’ll be a ■■■■ when he’s at the checkout and everywhere else he goes.

Everywhere else I go generally everyone is pleasant enough, I’m not green and I’ve had issues in the past on previous jobs, but you’re always going to in any industry.

My Mrs works in a office, it’s not all rosey! I didn’t want to say she gets dicks!

I also deal with a lot of drivers delivering to my work, the vast majority are spot on, but there’s the occasion ■■■■.

I work for a farmer and used to be on the tractors, I was quite proud the 1st time I got the ■■■■■■ sign after holding people up going up a hill, despite absolutely nowhere for me to pull over from the point they got behind me to the point the overtook me.

I just don’t know what some people are expecting and think when expecting something that isn’t gonna happen you’re gonna be disappointed.

I don’t know, I really don’t know what you’re wanting, a feeling that people view you / us
as knights of the road.

If you happen to be sitting in your car eating at a fast food place because the dining room is closed and see a truck driver walk to the door and walk away please ask them if you can drive thru for their meal. Since walk up isn’t allowed at the drive thru they have no way to get their meal. We owe them that much!
