TRUCKIN IN THE 80's (International)

have you any more photos of other firms you worked al?

I had two stints as a driver, when I came out of the merchant in 1971, I worked at Cabmont, Bowkers Night trunk, Renwicks, and Hiltons HTS where I got my class 1, the only photo that exists from the early days is Gardner 240’s shot of my old Atki, in the London yard.

my second time around, in 1979 I worked at Luckings, and then George Francis, and Hilldyke, which was Francis under a diffrent name, luckily I had a camera by then, and took some photos.

Alan

do you have any pics of luckings pls al didnt he do some theatre work as well

WHEEL NUT Thought u’d still be here, waiting for your DOW piccys

found these for you .

truckerash, once again you have scored a bulls eye. Dow Freight Scania ANC 133T was driven I think by Tony Gibbons a.k.a. Big T,(ex Law Arabian,Roy Bradford.) Although I dont think that is his missus in the cab,I dont remember who drove it before him, it might of been Bill Bentley. The Transcontinetal is being driven by Brian Tonge ( or was it Brian Cobb ) a.k.a. Petal, ex Chet Trux Driver. Ash I think its about time that they made a blue oval plaque with your name on it and hung it on the stairs at Dover Customs, or at Carisio,if there still there. Thanks for all the amazing photos, Regards Steve.

My Dad used to work for a firm called St Magnus Shipping in the early 70s, they were out of Finanglia Wharf. I think they were taken over by George, they were silver & purple too. He drove a D1000, which looked ridiculous with a 40ft box behind it! a Guy Big J, the early one without the false grille & got a brand new Scania 80 on a L plate. They were doing a lot of containers full of tape players & tv’s, well they were full when they left the dock! There was another firm in there who ran over the water with, i think red 110s, I remember a bloke called Vic, he had a girlfriend called Heather who was a painter & a monkey called Jacko.

One thing I do remember was they sent a motor over to Germany for the first time & the trailer was too high for Belgium, there were also tales of the dock being used as an underwater car park. Is any of this true or just part of the legend?

Big thanks to two of our members, mushroomman (who posted the Dow feight pics above) and foden46. My missus told me her uncle used to do M/E in the 70s and 80s but that was all she could remember…so after a few postings on here it turns out that the two members above used to know him!!! :open_mouth:

His name was Stan Warmbold, he used to be a subby for Dow Freight, had a Foden 290 on first in Dows colours then upgraded to a blue F12 with the name “Osprey” written on it.

I keep on at her to get in touch with his side of the family to sort out some pics, apparently Stan had a load from his time down there!!!

Big thanks once again lads.

Ken Hoggers (senior) 141 sounded awesome. Straight through pipes  :sunglasses:
His son is still around today, pulling for Ocean Trailers.

and your roof top sleeper Keith

The fransen 141 pictured reg xue was driven by an old friend of mine called brian fenwick he had this truck when it was brand new and as far as i know it was the only uk tractor own by fransen.Brian would wash this lorry off at any time day or night it was always immaculate. We had many a trip together on the olau line out of sheerness in the 70,s he lived by the meat market in smithfield and could be seen washing the lorry of with his hose connected to the public toilet in the market.I always admired him,he had been to most places an was a real laugh a really great bloke.I learned some years ago that he had past away from cancer,he always smoked capstan full strength 1 after the other. He was a real character and sadly missed.

[ Hi bullitt, just thought I had to put the record straight. Sorry to have to tell you but the pictures of the Dow Freight Scania 111 and the Ford Transcontinental, are not mine. :frowning: :frowning: : All credit goes to, once again, truckerash. I do know Dow had one Foden 290 ,named after a race horse, called, Ella mana moo, or something like that, and the driver was Alan Morrey. Stan had a identical Foden, but I cant remember if he gave it a name. I also know, that truckerash, MIGHT have a picture of a Dow Foden in his photo shoebox,( shoebox, it must be more like a 40 foot container ). This picture ( if he has got one ) has a fifty- fifty chance of being Stan Warmbolds truck. As Ash seems to be able to pull rabbits out of top hats, if you ask him, although he is a very busy man, he may be able to help you. Regards, Steve.

Cheers for that steve, it seems truckerash has a picture of just about every truck going!!!
Maybe he can perform another miracle!! Over to you ash

I hope trucker ash does have a picture or two of the Dow foden that Alan drove as he was my adopted dad ,bless him

I’ve got quite a lot of pictures of trucks from the 80s could somebody please tell me how to put them on this site ,the photos are on my phone,as I don’t have a computer, thanks Steve

Depending which model of phone you have,as they are all different but to start with, on the Trucknet website press the upload attachment, it should then ask if you want to choose a file from a photo you downloaded in to your phone in the photo album or select a photo in a download file, it’s kind of the same either way.

After selecting choose file to select your photo then press add the file.

When pressing upload attachment, select the size of the photo, select the size, it can always be deleted later once you can view it, then select choose file, then upload it , if you don’t, it won’t display the photo.

Before uploading it you can preview it before submitting it to check how it came out, if happy with it,then press submit.

Great thanks I’ll try it ,thanks again, steve

TBH it took me a while to do it, and a few attempts to get it right.

I’ve tried to upload them ,but for some reason it ain’t working,I’ve ask someone who is a bit more clued up with this sort of thing

Haha done it ,I can put the photos on now ,hope people like them
