Tricky artic reversing

With trickier reverses like this, I always imagine the path the vehicle would take coming out of the parking space and driving off, then aim to trace that, but backwards.

With MSA parking I’d be inclined to get the whole lorry straight before much of it goes into the parking bay, with only minimal straightening-up once it’s going in.

If your not tramping and your just taking your 45 mins and there is only 1 bay left dont park in it. Just park in front of the guys parked up for the night and take your break there simple :stuck_out_tongue:.
Or just park on the edges of the MSA.

It’s what I do. Unless there is plenty of space I rarely take up a ■■■■■■■■■■■■ in the MSA.
Partly due to being lazy, partly, due to the hassle of doing a tight reverse and mainly because if there is only one spot a tramper might need it.

You can read all the advice and some may help but there is no substitute for practice.

This ^^^ in a nutshell. As with anything in life, practice so much that it becomes harder to get it wrong than right.

Quite a few were struggling to park in Cambridge svcs last night, I know they are tight-ish spaces but 1 driver [emoji848] took 15mins to get parked, and that was with assistance, I think the Q was to Huntingdon [emoji1787]
This driver was doing the opposite of what I do and was coming in at some ridiculous angles and then trying to screw it round to get the trailer straight.
They did get a tad close a couple of times which wasn’t helped by quite a few impatient drivers squeezing past as soon as there was enough room [emoji2369] only to end up at the top with not enough room to turn round cos of the stupid position they have put covid test building.

Need to see the position v the gap that he’s trying to get into. Also are those parked on the opposite side supposed to be behind the white line or what’s the point of it.

We see some weird and wonderful reversing.
Something I have noticed is quite a lot of drivers tend to oversteer. Turning the steering wheel back and forth with the trailer hardly moving.
Need to try a old truck without power steering and that would soon stop.

Ive done that a couple of times jake - Im turning it and then I try to straighten it up but its too late and it just keeps turning - almost like ive jack knifed it. Have to pull it forward but then the arse is too far over and you are totally jiggered!

Yeah, don’t worry about it. Keep up the practice and it will soon become second nature.
As I’m sure you have been told 1000 times if in doubt get out and have a look.

Cambridge services is a pain. I avoid them the bays were made for cars not trucks. Rothwell is the only one with decent bays

How many spaces…

Would be lost if they herringboned the slots at Cambridge?

It doesn’t help you when Trota’s are using it as a base for about 15 trailers. Reckon these we’re the ones that were using Orwell as a base before it closed. I’m assuming they are paying (well the units will I suppose)
They could definitely do alot to improve the truck parking, I’m not sure whether they are doing similar to Cobham and putting more truck parking round the back of the garage

This shows how he’s using the pivot points and overhang to steer it into the gap.

He needed to keep the left lock he had at 10.29 to stop the overhang from then swinging over to far to the opposite side on the drivers side instead of just needing to clear the far truck. He wound it back straight when he got back in the cab at 10.34 which meant he then needed to shunt forward at 12.17 to try to correct the result of that on the overhang having oversteered it to far to the drivers side.

Also our trailers are shorter so they react faster which means starting a bit further back.

True.

I still like to read the occasional bad, not sensible, selfish advice too tho!
