Nice one John , I bet Backsplice had better lights than Blackpool illuminations , Derek told me that SARAMAT where always round Trans Arabia trying to re recruit our drivers , I did not know this , Ron
As one Turk said to me ‘those thieving Greeces people!’ Pot - kettle?
We standardised on palm couplings, which to be honest were never as good as the British push on D couplings, and American rear lights, a sort of can shaped depression, containing the bulbs with a push in lens held on by a circular spring. It meant that when you left your trailer in the port for return to America, you’d added to your spares supply!
Ok Ron you sucked me in !!! I think it was Trans Arabia that tried to poach SARAMAT lads …we were better dart players than you lot ■■? as for lights we had problems with them too I don,t remember ever picking up a trailer in the port or the yard and even straight off the ship that had working lights …we all had light boards you can see it on the back of this pic one Sudanese driver drove the sparkie nuts because the right hand flasher was left on the trailer …he could,nt get the idea that he just had to turn it round …I tell you it was,nt easy sometimes
Pete that is an ex Jones unit its fleet number was 419 driven from new by Billy Brooke’s it was sold to Billy Baker at the same time as the one which is still stood in his yard which was fleet number 416 and was a tipper unit driven by the late but great Johnny Mathews

Cookie 1 well said ,This picture might be out of focus !!! But Johnny Mathews is as clear as day in my mind he was a great lad Ron , PS (Backsplice )I was just checking to see if you where still standing upside down and not on your belly, Ron
I blowed the horn going along the Christian By Pass when trying to get a wave from the bedouin women goat herders , I never saw a white bloke with a heard of camels , looks like he is pointing to the North Star , trying to find the baby Jesus, Ron
Just reading a Michael Connelly where ‘Mickey Haller’ is interviewing a man in a prison next to an airforce runway in California, planes are taking off and making his teeth rattle.
The old Jeddah airport was marooned in what was now a suburban area, but was still home to the Saudi Air Force. You could stand at the fence not far from the runway. When the fast jets took off, sometimes two at a time, with the afterburners on, you didn’t just hear them, your whole body vibrated with the shock wave! Some sight and sound.
I also read in the English Language paper about a block of flats near there, which had been badly constructed, the floors weren’t properly fastened to the walls. When the top floor collapsed, it took every floor under it in a sort of domino effect.
The owner and the architect were tried and beheaded within weeks. Swift justice!
Backsplice ! That reminds me of when I went to Liverpool, to see Walsall in the cup ? Parking up near Anfield in my Mk2-3.8 jag these Scouse kids ? Knew they where onto a good thing !!! Saying we will look after you car mister for 1/2 crown ? They pinch your wheels round here , (bloody hell ) Although we thrashed Liverpool and knocked them out of the FA cup ■■?!!! I could not Wait to get back to the Jag, finding it intact less 1/2 crown I drove back getting on the M6 just as the police where closing it due to fog and ice , the heater in the Jag was not good and I only had a 1/2 a saucer of windscreen to see through it was black ice all the way Ron.
John West mentioned the floors collapsing in the block of modern flats , The old town houses in Jeddah stood and to my mind are still standing , as far as I know ,Tony supplied most of the A/C s in Jeddah , so there standard of living improved !!! And so did Tony’s , Ron
