Thing is mate MSA s and many truckstops are crime hotspots themselves.
Nowhere is 100% safe, we got a trailer nicked from our own yard a couple of years ago.
If they want in they will get in…end of.
Our lots insurance state trucks must be parked in “safe parking”. As drivers we know that MSA’s and truckstops aren’t safe but as far as the bean counters are concerned that is where they want us. If you’re empty then its fair game where you want to park but have a load on then its one these “safe parking” spots. We’ve had arguments before over this as the only places I’ve had my curtains slashed is at MSA’s but the powers that be want us parking there. If we park there and something happens to the load then it comes out of someone else’s pocket. We park in a layby and get done over, the company picks up the bill and they HATE doing that.
On container work in the UK i had a push bike in the passenger seat or put in the back of an empty trailer/box , on a handball tip that could take six to seven hours i would do a long ride through the lanes, they would call me when nearly empty .
On European work , i also had the bike and some bar bell weights to pass the time on a warm summers night , i would also walk to a village or river, or stumble on a medieval castle .
The MSA `s in Europe are all fenced in but you can walk out via the staff car park by an unlocked gate or barrier .
On a 45 hour off weekend rest all the Eastern European drivers would stay in their cabs for two days or more , and not walk off the site .
An added bonus was to drop the trailer at the customer, then bob tail, solo unit to the nearest beach in the summer .
Or if weekended in the Aosta valley, get the cable lift up the mountains .
If on a night out in Cherwell Valley MSA, if you walk though the hedge by the truck parking, and head down the lane, there is a wonderful little pub with a log fire and real ale .
If facing the hedge , facing south, then bear left or eastwards, as there is another pub heading west off the big roundabout .
Sleep as I was too tired to do anything and was having minimum time off anyway,
If you do tramping at a bad firm and let them push you and tell you where to park it can be a miserable existanse

Pardon you let them tell you where to park tell them the trucks coming back find some albainian to do it i’m off,no wonder the industry’s fucgd…
Cheers chaps. Think I will have to make notes of various places I go to regarding possible overnight stays if needed. Just find these days so many industrial estates having double yellows and cameras all over them or Lay-by’s with signs saying ‘no overnight parking’.
I usually park in lay-by or industrial est as I much prefer that normally self cater ( too mean to spend on food out & don’t like going to pub on own ) clean cab if needs read book

That’s what I have done for years, and still do.
If I am delvering somewhere and I see a potential parking place close to a cafe or pub and/or any other facilities I note it down for the future.
I have numerous little corners all over the place.
The only advice I would give to you as a new tramper on this subject, is be very selective who you tell about them.
There are many anti social, ignorant, and thick as pig ■■■■ drivers who will get a park closed by leaving all their crap behind, thus spoiling it for the guys who know how to conduct themselves properly, so only tell mates who can be trusted.

Of late I’ve been spent my evenings contemplating why I packed in a well paid job , doing 8 hrs a night , trunking and ended up doing this crap again , hindsight is a wonderful thing

Exactly right there rob. I have a great parking place that I have been using for about 9 years on and off. Probably only ever seen 10 other wagons there in that time. Only a 2 minute walk to a supermarket. It’s also well lit and has security cameras.

No I didn’t but many of the drivers did, telling then to run to the max then they were forced to sling it in the next lay by,I just couldn’t work under a regime anymore that questioned why I parked at a truck stop and then seemed baffled when I told them I wanted facilities to wash and use toilet I think some firms think am chine drives the truck

Dozy…the gift that keeps on giving.
What you up to doze, who are you on for now, …did you and your mate fall out or what?
Are you still on pre mod?
And a happy new year to you bud.
(Even if it aint happy, it will sure as hell be eventful eh mate )
If he is still on pre .mod, we will have to sit in suspense for a few days.

Why the hell is he still, still on pre-mod?
He’s looked upon as a loose cannon by the mods I reckon.

I didn’t know about this place near Cherwell valley, cheers for the info. I’m there quite a bit and this will come in handy.
Chapman, the friendly pub with a good banter with locals is in the hamlet of Stoke Lyn, the Peyton Arms.
Shut on Mondays .
Hopefully no drivers sat in there wearing their hiviz .
