Tramping vs days vs nights

So what’s it like going from Ireland or uk to where ever your going not mixing or socialising because you live in cab 24/7 cooking
Some people have a life in work or at home, people who cook in the cab don’t, the memory’s come from mixing and wanting to meet new people it’s life

You show how dim you are by thinking you know anything at all about my life just from the tiny percentage of which I put online. I haven’t lived in cab 24/7 for 3 years, if you can’t even get the basics right best not comment and make yourself look a fool eh? I’m going to be now. In a house. That I share with friends. And tomorrow night I’m out with other friends. Before work Saturday.

Good man. I must admit I hadn’t seen any of your videos until a few months ago. Clicked on the link out of interest, as you do, and ended up binge watching them all over a weekend. Great stuff.
As an aside to the conversation, my preference was always being away in Europe for a few weeks. It wasn’t so much “tramping” then, it was just what the job was and what I expected it to be. Load up, ship out, drive, drive and Drive a bit more, tip here, tip there, reload a bit here, tip some there on the way back (CABOTAGE :open_mouth: ), reload and return.
I have done day / evening / night work (killer) and it not the same. I cant do early starts, 2/3/4/5am. Horses for courses and all that but the bottom line was always, if I was not going to be sleeping in my own bed, in my own home, then I would rather be away and somewhere else interesting ,than start work in the middle of the night or some ridiculously early time of the morning, finish in the evening, travel back home, shower, food, bed, and repeat.
Start at 7am and finish at 2/3/4am was always fine, but I couldnt drag my sorry arse out of bed, day after day, in the middle of the night, to do a “day” shift.

Personally I feel that I’d just carried on working when doing night out. Even after a bad run around 13 hours shift I feel like reseting and starting from fresh by going home, having a shower and sleeping in my bed. Most of the time I feel ok next morning to start again. Now if all this closing lay bays I just feel that is not worth the hassle if night out

The latest thing on here when the daymen are slavering on about ‘‘sleeping in a tin box’’ etc etc is the night out money.
If it was the same proportional amount in relationship to your wage as it was when I started it would be around 40 quid, or if it was for cheap digs even more.
So yeh it’s crap, yeh it could be better, but it is literally making the best out of a bad job.
The types of cabs we live in nowadays are like comparing a garden shed with a penthouse flat to what we just slept in as a matter of routine, we used to kip across the seats in a non heated day cab on a ■■■■ foam covered board ffs!
I know some daymen start menstruating if a night out is mentioned :unamused: , as it aint for everybody, but it suits many, ok to discuss but why the abuse.?
As for breaking down the 20 to 30 quid or whatever we get, to a pound per hour ratio to make a point, …it’s totally irellavent, it’s subsistence ! :unamused: it was never about being paid per hour, as I said a crap rate of subsistence but the whole ■■■■ job is crap nowadays.

The thing is with tramping is that you have to be organised and geared up for it in order to make and get the best out of it. Day men are not geared up for nights out so if they get caught out and have to spend a night out then it will feel like hell. It doesn’t take a special type of person to do it, when I first started tramping I hated it because I didn’t have both the experience or the gear, I soon gained both and now it is actually better than day work. Tramping does not mean living like a tramp, I keep myself clean and tidy at all times and look better after a week away than a lot of day men look, some day men look drained and half dead because of their ridiculous long hours. It is all about what suits you, if you have tried tramping for a short period or had the odd night out then don’t knock it because you were not properly geared up for it. It suits me and it suits others, I wouldn’t knock day or night men just because that doesn’t suit me. As for the money, yes it is ■■■■ as is all drivers wages.

I enjoyed my nights out when I was doing the JCB stuff all over Europe, parked up in some brilliant places (as well as a few crap ones) normally near some nice taverna for a drink or three with a local type meal, unfortunetly unlike our Tobes I never got to meet the mayors daughter but on the odd occasion I did get … nuff said !

Biggest problem I have with tramping is saving money.
If I had the willpower not to eat out and just save money avoiding MSAs and takeaways and just eat sandwiches made at home I’d be alright.
I know I cant do that though as I’ll just be miserable.

I very very rarely eat at msa and never from vans, if you have your own wagon a microwave makes a world of difference or/and a gas burner.
Precooked food frozen, everything from scouse, chilli, lasagne all kinds, I also take pre cut fruit in tubs, one a day, grapes, pineapple, kiwifruit, melon, strawberry. Nice and refreshing.
I do have a good selection of chocolate to.

Heading over to Liverpool/Chelsea game tomorrow.
Always wondered what exactly is “Scouse” as in the food bit??
Mince n onion/spuds sort of mash-up maybe??

We do it with diced beef, onions, carrots, leeks and potatoes, seasoned with a bit of garlic and a couple of oxo cubes or stock.
It’s like a casserole, I like the gravey thick some like it runny.
It’s can be made with mince or lamb, blind scouse is vegetarian scouse.
red cabbage, I like brown sauce and crusty bread…■■■■■■ starvin now  .

its their version if irish stew,or coddle.
another way to look at it was in years gone by,then whatever you didnt use,or binned during the week,it was lumped together and stewed to death on the day before payday as they had no dosh left to buy food with which is similar to elsewhere hence stew,or mince and tatties is just cheapo food for the working class masses.
if you look at proper souse, its just the same as the irish version.
kinda like camion stew, the difference being that in liverpool, whey you ate scouse,it was because you had nicked it from someone else.

That is a bit of faffing about though. I am lazy when it comes to these things though.

It’s easy to make, fry the meat up than basically bung it all in a pan, boil up then simmer for a couple of hours.
It’s always better a day or two later, you make it in bulk and tuppaware it up.
Cheap, easy and got veg in, so in my mind healthy

Bloody hell mate, faffing about? It takes 5 mins in a microwave.
Take some taties with you and have jacket taties and a salad if you can’t be arsed to pre.prepare grub, pasta from Tesco, Tuna etc.
Not surprised you can’t save money eating at MSAs.

Not really faffing, just a bit of pre-prep, it’s great with these days of fridges and microwaves. Not only is it cheaper it will be much healthier, if you make the food yourself you have a lot more control what goes into it, things like salt, sugar and preservatives, and with the sort of money you spend on MSA food, you’d be able to buy some proper quality ingredients.

Although personally when I used to do a proper truck drivers job, I didn’t cook in the cab every night, I liked to have a fry up now and then, or to get out of the cab and have a proper meal out in a local or if there are any left a decent Cafe, Truckstop and if you’re lucky talk to interesting, funny, normal people and hopefully avoiding the know it all truck driver in process.
