Job Hunting

So, I’ve passed my test a couple of weeks ago and have started snifffing around for work.

I wrote a covering letter explaining who I was, here’s what it looked like

Dear Sir or Madam

I am writing to you in order to be considered for any vacant driving positions you may have available.

I gained my class 2 LGV license on the 14th March 2011 as well as my CPC module 4 on 25th March
I am in possession of a digital tachograph card, and have been trained in it’s use. I am also up to date with the current working time directives and drivers hours.

I have a wealth of experience on the road, gained from the previous roles I have held. Specifically, I have driven vans and trailers for a total of over 5 years. Many of these roles involved multi drop deliveries.

I understand that a haulage company places a great deal of trust in it’s drivers. Because of this, I would like you to know that I consider myself a conscientious person, a careful driver and above all a hard worker. As I am seeking a start to my career as a truck driver, I am willing to start at the bottom, and am prepared to be as flexible as required with regard to the work on offer.

I have enclosed a copy of my C.V for your consideration. I hope you find it to your liking. Should you need to contact me, please call any time on the numbers above.

I look forward to your response

Kind regards

Phill Hxxxxxxxxxx

I put this in an envelope printed up twenty and headed off.
I called in at a few of the larger haulage companies within a 20 mile radius that I know run lots of rigids.

I managed to speak to a couple of transport managers and overall the feedback I got was encouraging.
a couple of firms said, we’re not looking for anyone right now, but we might be soon, and we don’t have a problem hiring new drivers.

great stuff.

I also phoned around some of the agencies I’ve driven vans for and let them know I now have C.
but agencies being agencies, I didn’t get to speak to anyone i knew, and they all promised to call me later as the person I usually deal with is unavailable.

I HATE AGENCIES HATE THEM HATE THEM HATE,
they’re a bunch of self serving money grabbing turds. what’s particularly annoying is the disposable regard they seem to have for their staff. use and abuse.

anyway, rant over. I’ve made a big list of other haulage companies, that I am yet to apply to, also there are a ton of agencies that I could also register with. I’m in no massive rush though, as I havent even had my license back from the DVLA yet, and agencies wont touch me without it.

so that was my first effort. which took me an afternoon and a few quick in fuel.

This morning, one of the larger general hauliers called me and asked me to come in for a chat on monday 9.00am. they said they’re not looking for a permanent member of staff just yet, but they are looking for temporary with a view to going permanent,
I’m more than happy with that…

I’ll let you know how it goes.

Congrats on the pass!!! Any experience is good experience. Good luck in the job hunt mate!!! Hope your luck will have come my way so I can get this apprenticeship with volvo!!

Again congrats!!!

Cheers

Jonny :sunglasses:

Congratulations bet your grinnin from ear to ear now

Good luck phil ,
Good approach to the job hunting , i took a similar route inspired by a previous post on here .
Printed off about 30 cv’s and covering letters . In the end i only needed one copy
The only agency i had any good things to say about is manpower , i registered friday and was working for them the next monday . ok it was only van driving , but cat c could of been round the corner .
After a week and half on the van i got a call from my now employer offering me a job on 8 wheel tipper truck . Been there 4 days now and im loving it :sunglasses:

ITS encouraging you have a potential job already …

cheers Mike

I got a call yesterday morning from an agency (boo hiss) asking me whether i’d be interested in some 7.5 ton work doing multi drop for B&Q. absolutely i said.

great; be there in an hour please.

so within an hour i was trundling along with a load of rock wool and deck chairs on.
I wasnt driving just being drivers mate i suppose. I still havent had my license back from DVLA.

got on going work with them too, so it might be time to stop delivering pizza.

Well Done Phil for getting work so soon after passing.

Good luck for your future plans

Dean
