Tragic Swiss Coach Crash

I meant, trucks carrying harmless goods are limited. Children are viewed as a precious commodity, are then barrelled down a motorway without a seat belt on!

From the Swiss press

We do not yet know the cause of the accident, but police have seen through surveillance cameras that the bus was suddenly diverted to the left, hit the wall and bounced right onto the wall of a room exhaust.

I think in this day in age we should have intelligent cruise control with radar linked to the steering which steers the vehicle in a motorway lane keeping it a safe distance from the one in front. Would be useful on those boring overnight motorway trips.

As for trains hitting walls - no they don’t but they can hit drivers who fall asleep and drive off the motorway and onto the rails as at Great Heck :astonished:

But that would still have happened regardless of the train speed!

And this coach crash would have happened regardless of speed. Believe me I’ve done these overnight coach trips and believe me they are hard enough without slowing them down and making them longer and more boring.

I know you have…I used to do Corporate golf tours in Ireland. Had loads of ■■■■■■ executive types causing chaos on the bus. It was so tempting to put the foot down, just to get rid. But common sense had to prevail. It’s sad these things occasionally happen. But something needs looking at here.

Hmmm, without intending offence - and whilst grieving as much as anyone over the loss of so much life - this was an EU regulated coach that crashed outside the Union, etc.

Am wondering how, if at all, Brussels will ‘officially’, both immediately & long-term respond whilst equally wondering if the Swiss can learn from anything that may currently be applied through current rules of the Union?

Also whether Cameron will provide a message telling the Swiss how to run their tunnel roads on behalf of Van Rumpuy?

Are you high or something?

Keith go and get stuffed

Well I don’t think it does. It’s a tragic tragic accident but also a very rare one. If anything speed certainly isn’t the issue. It’s the drivers, certainly in the Interski case and most likely here.

I dunno, by all accounts, the bus suddenly veered across. I simply think that going slower would prevent more deaths. Not blaming, just thinking of the children.

I’ll leave you guys to your ‘Top Trumps’ of who can out-grieve the best then…

But like I say how slow do we go? And would it? 100kmh through the night on deserted French motorways is bad enough 90 would be soul destroying. I reckon you’d see more in the ditch not less. How may people have died in Europe in coach accidents in the past 10 years? I’d wager not many. Too often things like this cause a knee jerk reaction understandably

I’m not grieving but as I opened the post after seeing your name I thought ‘let’s see if he pins this on Blair’. I wasn’t far wrong. Your hilarious with the way to try to sledgehammer Europe and the government into totally unrelated or inappropriate topics.

In fact your comment about Cameron is just completely nonsensical! How do you come up with these things!?

It is not speed that killed them it was sudden stop.
Sleepliness/ tiredness of the driver. How many of us went through that.

I agree with switch, ive done deserted french motorways through the night…at 85kmh and by christ i struggled to stay awake so id rather get further quicker…

I’ve done the deserted Euro stuff too. I concur it’s boring. But safety has to remain THE priority.
Be careful out there.

Indeed and slower isn’t always safer

Accident happened just 30 minutes after depart from resort, driver distraction must be the cause here

Maybe a little.

The Swiss police have camera footage that shows it suddenly veered off course, so it could be mechanical or even a blowout.

Whatever it is, it isn’t the fault of the EU, The British Prime Minister or an act of God.
