Traction control

Why don’t tractor units have traction control such as you see on many cars. I was slip sliding about today in the wet. I put the diff lock on and it seemed to help.

Any ideas.

THE Newer Lorrys should have it fitted as standard

and it is called ASR,

The unit I had was a 2004 Daf 85 but no asr on the dash.

Renault Premiums have had it for a while.

But if you want to get a tractor unit sideways, then the Merc Axor is the ideal motor to have.(Not that I would know, being the consumate professional, and all. )

Ken.

have you got a booklet in the vehicle from DAF

as this should show and describe all instruments

which are to hand in the vehicle.

You could always slow down abit :unamused: i personally wouldnt recommend driving around with your diff locks engaged all the time, thats not what they are designed for, they are for helping you get out of sticky situations ( i should know i drove a tipper :smiling_imp: ) you will be destroying your tyres by doing this and also if your heavily loaded you run the risk of,as we like to call it “blowing her back diffs out” ive done it once when i forgot to dis-engage them coming out of a job, couple of miles down the road BANG they had blown to bits and my gaffer was facing a hefty bill. hope this helps

A lot of new trucks have, my V-plate Premium did, like Quinny said they’ve had it for a while now.
Like Gav says, driving in anything other than a straight line on a hard surface with your diff-lock engaged will do a lot of expensive damage so i wouldn’t recommend it. Also you’ll find it very difficult to steer into anything other than a straight line!
So yeah, best advice i reckon is just to slow down as conditions dictate, or start dropping hints about a new motor!

Are you sure? There is on all the 85s of that age I’ve driven. It’s on the centre console next to the passenger door switch and the night heater switch if I recall correctly. When it’s turned off ‘ASR’ will blink on and off on the dash display to let you know.

Was that last bit a joke? :open_mouth: As said in earlier posts - you should not be driving on the road with the diif-lock on. It is there to get you moving when you are stuck, not for normal driving.

I think DAF 85s do have ASR over a certain trim level - all the ones I’ve driven have had it.

I think most new trucks I have driven in the last five years or so have been fitted with traction control. It’s often called different names by different manufacturers.

Remember that you’re probably putting down onto the road upwards of 2000 Nm over an area of no more than a quarter of a square metre. Even with traction control, you will get some spinning when light.

You should adapt your driving to suit the conditions - don’t rely on electronic aids to do the job for you.

Stay safe. :sunglasses:
