Torch Relay Traffic Jams

Why does it follow such an erratic course around the country?

If you look at the photo of the police car I posted above you can clearly see it was from the MET and I am near Accrington which I suppose is a lot of miles from MET land.
I also counted 16 motorcycles in the convoy but didn’t notice if theywere local.

I really dont understand why people are getting excited over the Olympic torch touring the country.
If i wanted to see a flame that captured the British spirit,I"d set fire to a Mosque!!

I see when it went to Coventry some kids tried to nick it

FPML

A couple of months ago I had a passenger who was amongst other things a stilt walker and juggler, he apparently is driving a London taxi as part of the entourage on this event.

70 day tour driving all over the British Isles, fed and watered and put up in hotels plus gets on to the opening ceremony whilst being paid.

Whatever your views on the Olympic debacle are, that’s not a bad gig.

All i can add to that . . The drivers seat must be well back and the sunroof is open.
Ba boom tish.

Yeah suppose its abit to much to ask a few people to show abit of consideration for a once in a life time event isnt it?

Hardly a life-changing experience though is it?

To some of the people carrying it its not life changing but its certainly a big event for them, and for allot of the people i know doing it is it small repayment for putting allot into the community. And judging by the thousands of people that i saw come out to watch it they feel the same way

Agreed. It came through Matlock on friday and passed within a couple of hundred yards of our house, I didn’t go to see it but most of our street did and are still talking about it today so it obviously had an effect on them. A couple of roads were closed but it was soon done with and things returned to normal, however it seems to have given the locals a buzz so for the folk actually running with it must be really exciting. I think that I would have more interest if there was just the one torch instead of 8000 of them, still they are making decent money on ebay!

Pete.

Two of the expensive liveried motors mentioned above.

Notice the police car is not from Accrington where the photo was taken.

.

The expensive liveried motors will have paid for themselves tenfold in advertising alone, although I do worry about the health and safety aspect, those girls could get smashed in the face with a hanging tree branch and the lad on the coke van steps should be wearing knee pads and a hiviz vest at least. :stuck_out_tongue:

I don’t get what it is about some people who moan about events such as the jubilee and the olympics and other such events. They may cost money to put on, but a lot of that is from business sponsors. The tax payer will pick up a large tab as well, but in the grand scheme of things, it’s a minute percentage of the tax paid in. If the big corporations and multi millionaires were made to pay all of the tax that they avoid, it would pay for the olympics 10 times over. If you want to clear the countries debt crisis, pay off your credit cards, pay off your mortgage, and pay all of your taxes.
It has a “feel good” factor that no amount of putting that cash into the NHS black hole would produce, you could put the whole GDP of the country into that, and it would still spend more. It brings the people of the country together for once, It gives some of us who don’t see what is happening to our sons and daughters in places like afghanistan, the opportunity to show support for them, to be proud that we belong to such a great country as GREAT BRITAIN! We may no longer “rule the waves”, we may no longer be perfect, our government and the EU might have weakened us as a nation in the eyes of the world, but who cares, we are BRITISH, and no one can do pagents and major events like we can but this is still a great country to live in. It will generate billions of £’s of foreign money from visitors, not just to the games, but to other places around the country. It will have a knock on effect, when other countries see how well we can do things, it will increase tourism, and therefore foreign money for years to come.
What a sad world we would live in if we didn’t spend our money on things like this. Those that mutter things like “waste of money” " spend it on the NHS" etc, what a boring world we would live in. It would be like living in a black and white film of Stalinist Russia, constantly cold, wet, grey, where no one smiles, and everyone is afraid to speak, where the highlight of the day is a meal of black bread and sausage made from goats intestines.
For god’s sake stop moaning! So, for a couple of hours you are disturbed by something that thousands of people want to see, if you don’t want to see it, or avoid the hold ups, the route and times have been public for months, so just plan your day better. Of course there needs to be a high volume of security around this event, unfortunealtly in this day and age there are some nasty people who would love to cause disruption in order to get across thier anti everything views. As for the entourage, the sponsors spend a great deal of cash to fund this event, so surely they deserve a chance to tell everyone about it.Those trucks etc, won’t have been paid for from your tax money, but from your purchases of coca cola etc.
Let those of us that do enjoy these things, have our pleasure. If you don’t want to watch the olympics, there are plenty of repeat DIY shows, and Jeremy Kyle to watch.
Have a great oylmpics all!

(Goes into a chorus of Rule Brittannia, and Jeruselem!)

I went into Boots in Stratford to get a drink and till girl asked “have you found a good place to watch?” and was shocked when I said I’m on the way back to the car so I can avoid it.

TruckerJon; Jubilee was interesting and quite a few royal programmes on the history channels that were good, but to get excited over what is just a large sportsday? I’ll find some grass to cut or something vaguely interesting on one of the umpteen +1 channels before I watch it.
Having said that, the paralympic wheelchair hurdles, and blind javelin will be fun…

Good too see the haulage industry’s contribution is a fat trucker on he coke wagon

Notice the police car is not from Accrington where the photo was taken.

All the Olympic vehicles are Yorks registered 12 plate BMW’s.

They have got 4500 assorted Mini’s and BMW’s of all shapes and sizes. No doubt the Met have some freebies

Heared a fella in the bank in Luton say they gonna block the road when torch near by then reopen it once last thing on the end of the convoy passes, so I guess they do a rolling road block

It’s been in Essex today, just noticed that the BBC website has drivers eye footage of the whole route. The motorbike outriders leapfrog the convoy and block junctions and roundabouts to allow the convoy to pass. If you seen the torch go past you could look and find yourself.

My colleague went the other way at 1015 today, easy to spot as he had a wide 360 on and had all his lights going
