Moose:
when i started with a volvo f6 4 wheeler and then moved onto fl7 6 wheeler i could run the truck, car and landrover on 30%
i was doing blocks on tarmac untill last may at 44t and just the truck was on 50% and over then at just over £1.19 per litre incl vat so i dont see how they can make it pay now as my price for next week is £138.54 and if i was using the card it would be more!!
i think some folk try to kid themselves that there getting 10/11/12 to the gallon,i only ever got 8 at best on the block work and the crane had a donkey at that, that being said i never had the time to ponce about at 45/50 mph
as for the budget i dont know what he will do,but i do know if fuel heads up around the £2 per litre mark even my good work will be crap unless the cost can be passed on
moose
LOOK!!! Theres a fella that is prepared to tell it how it is!!!
Yeah I’ll 2nd what yr saying Moose. This is what prompted me to mention it to be honest. O/D’s telling me that they’re earning really good money and getting 9+ out of a V8. At the moment I’m managing. How much longer I ain’t sure. (managing = It ain’t easy. You want easy, go get a job!)

Totaly agree im on blocks n i genrally average. 7.0mpg but thetes the bullshipers that swear there getting 9 to 10 out of ththeres was on topblock few years back were was u. Running out of hilton n whats all this bt certain hauliers on guranted 500 a day more bullship i presume
chaversdad:
i average 8.5 - 9.5 but i only carry 6-8 ton in the container and its always empty back to the dock, even so my fuel is about 40% at the moment
How many people actually run around at 44-ton all day anyway?
A fair portion of my work is timber and chipboard, but even then we usually run out of volume before weight becomes an issue. I could almost get away with a 4x2 if I was allowed a bit more weight over the drive axle!

I’ve never actually worked it out but I would guess that on average I run at 44ton for 80% of the time or more, it just depends how well I can fit the work together to minimise empty running. If I can average 7mpg over a week I’m very happy, it’s usually 6 - 6.5.
I used to run a drop and go so not full weight all the time but often loaded both ways, k goodwin will know who i am as he used to pull the same trailer at one time
also i used to see you mr vain in hulland ward quite often as well, i worked out of there most days till a couple of years ago on flats/tautliners prior to going on the blocks, dont do either at the moment due to poor rates and not being able to pass on any extra for fuel rises
good to see you back on here mr v as i dont know you to speak to and i never used to post on here when you were a regular on here, are you still working for the same firm and can you do owt about the fuel other than turn down work that wont pay?
moose
monarch there will be some truth in the fact that certain hauliers will be on different rates as a lot of the contracted o/ds found out late 09/2010 it is fact that tarmac would quite often pay outside firms a lot more than the contracted o/ds for doing the same jobs
some of the o/ds could’n t see it at first but then the penny dropped, and when you think how much some had spent on new kit it went down like a lead balloon there may be a link to an article the cm ran about it at the time on here
there were 3 different rate scales which were outside haulier, preffered haulier, contracted haulier, i have here in in my desk some rate sheets for all the above and also a rate sheet for a firm which is none of the above and is also more than any of the 3 so owt is possible i would say
moose
Yeah still in the same place Moose. I’m comfortable and it suits my needs. Not been to Hulland for a while now. Kinda fell on its arse a bit after TDG got their grubby mits on it. Bloody shame really. Dint mind the work. Most moaned about it. I run around with approx 26t on most times. Occsional light load.
I’d rather be honest about how I’m getting on. Might help some one learn from my mistakes, god knows I’ve made some
I just dearnt work it out at the moment or i would prob end up shooting myself, no actually we ain’t doing that bad,but not that good either tho if that makes sense??, but for how long is anyone’s guess tho, each week it cost us at lest £20~£30 p week extra with the fuel per truck, but the rates ain’t we are around 35~40% on fuel most weeks anyway, this country is shot totally shot to bits

Its some crazy ■■■■■ mate. Don’t know about you, but I don’t see anything other than sitting with it and if it sinks so be it. Irrasponsable maybe, but when do you bale out? At the end of the day, who knows what tomorrow may bring. As long as you ain’t hoping for lower fuel prices!!!
Im probably a little too stubborn but i refuse to run my trucks at a loss , if there is no proftable work leave them in the yard …I sometimes leave the office on a friday without a single job for monday !! ,But by the time monday lunchtime comes around i can have 75 % of my trucks out and they are all last minute jobs ans command a lot higher rates . . . I have trucks that only work half the week but still earn more than a truck on dockl work all week and hasnt burnt the fuel either !!! , I drive myself and my truck is paid for ,it has only worked 3 weeks since christmas but has avergaed more than full time traction work over that period and ive only put 3k of diesel in it and ive had an easy few weeks , as for fuel consumtion i never allow more than 8mpg for my costs …I price every job i do (i price it not the customer) upon its own merits , for instance if a job involves heavy running round local backroads i will charge a lot more to allow for the fact the truck is only averaging 3mpg …and dont be fooled into thinking its doing any more …driving through a small town fully frieghted accross a few roundabouts and traffic lights can cost at lease £15 —
All that said we dont make any fortunes but just tick along with a decent living , in this game there are no fortunes …unless you steal them …Its easy for me to say but if more adopted my approach and laugh and refuse low paying work especially ■■■■ backloads the prices would have to increase …I will often run home empty as a 250quid backload from leeds to norwich isnt worth slowing down for and spoiling the next day and i allways price my jobs on round trip rates …a back load is a bonus and thats the way it should be not a necessity …
i could rant on all day about the downfalls of this ■■■■■■ industry

Mr V Repton and Co. I think at the moment it’s a case of covering costs and weathering the storm. Sometimes to do this. less is more. I’ve seen loads of lads struggle and try to work harder and end up losing more. Whatever the politicians say we live in a boom/bust society. The really clever people will buy or set up a whole company at the bottom of the market, and sell it at the top. Unfortunately for us poor ODs and ex ODs it’s just a case of trying to make enough in the good times to get through the bad.
Good luck to you all.

Thanks mate. I do go along with the less is more theory and it pays off. Having said that I did get told by some gobzb the other week that i was useless as an O/D cos in his eyes if the wheels weren’t turning I weren’t earning, but when I pointed out I’d rather not be a busy fool he dint understand!
