Top Gear Thread

A couple of minutes ago while I was reading another thread my 7 year old looked at the screen pointed to Mr Vain’s avatar and said “thats the truck from Top Gear last night”

On a lighter note who is going to own up to being the “Lorriest Stig”
with the tanned right arm ?

Mr Vain…

Shrek:
“Lorryists go to work, they sit down, they go home. How hard can it be?” J Clarkson.

…well just about sums up my day then!

Mine too. It’s only a hard job if people let it be and get wound up about things that don’t matter. One of the easiest jobs around IMHO

When I watch other episodes and laugh when they take the ■■■■ out of other users of the road network, caravanner’s for instance, it only seems right to also laugh when they turn their attention to truck drivers, and how could you not laugh at that last night. 8,000,000 viewers last night for that episode and I would have thought most, if not all, would have been laughing.

I noticed the racing truck on top gear was at brands hatch too. was it Mr Vain■■?

…not members of the RHA…apparently

It reckons driving a lorry through a brick wall ‘trivialises the essential role of the goods vehicle in fuelling the basic needs of the UK economy’.

well there is also some health and safety issues here
clarkson wasn’t wearing a high viz or steel toe cap boots

MandatorV8:
The programme next week will be great fun - watching Clarkson lampoon the RHA letter. Can’t wait!

It might be a good idea for as many of us as possible e-mailed the Top Gear office to say how much we enjoyed the programme (if you did of course!), also saying that you disagree with the RHA letter, quoting Trucknet we might get a mention and get a few new recruits.

That way the programme gets a true idea of how we as drivers reacted to the show without the RHA speaking for us without our permission.

I just sent a mail to Top Gear with my support and with a mention for Trucknet.

Just watch the truck program and it was a really good laugh. Taken in the context that it was meant you have excelled yourselves. Take no nothice of the RHA im surprised they even knew how to write a letter.
I am a HGV driver and i am also a member of a forum called Trucknet. The vast majority of drivers from there support you. Here is a link

Keep up the good work.

Message them with your thoughts.

Thanks for that Bubsy. We don’t get it over here and i really wanted to see it.
It was brilliant by the way.

Just to let you know that Truck & Driver has contacted the BBC to let them know about the positive comments that have appeared on this thread. I made it clear that some drivers were offended by some of the comments, but that the vast majority of people in this forum have largely positive things to say about Sunday’s programme.
I have just had an email from a Top Gear researcher to say thanks, and to let us know that Jeremy Clarkson has been made aware.

BBC One - Top Gear

Message them with your thoughts.

I’ve also sent them a message, telling them to ignore the RHA and URTU as they don’t represent real drivers and they shoudl spend more time on real issues affect us not complaining about a few light hearted comments on a TV show which is there for entertainment not a documentry.

Thank you Will.

That will carry a lot more weight than us sending individual comments.

Any thoughts on sending similar to the RHA

Ladies and gentlemen, this is from “the Times Online”

The comment from Andrew Tinkler says it all!!

"Jeremy Clarkson sparks fresh BBC row
Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson sparks a new BBC controversy with a joke about murdered prostitutes
Patrick Foster, Media Correspondent
Ofcom, the broadcasting watchdog, will decide today whether to launch an investigation into a joke by Jeremy Clarkson, the presenter of BBC’s Top Gear, about lorry drivers killing prostitutes.

The controversial broadcaster made his comment on Sunday night’s programme, on BBC2, as he and fellow presenters James May and Richard Hammond found out what it was like to drive heavy goods vehicles.

Bemoaning the constant need to change gear, Clarkson said: “This is a hard job and I’m not just saying that to win favour with lorry drivers, it’s a hard job.

“Change gear, change gear, change gear, check mirror, murder a prostitute, change gear, change gear, murder. That’s a lot of effort in a day.”

Notorious prostitute killers Peter Sutcliffe, the Yorkshire Ripper, and Steve Wright, also known as the Suffolk Strangler, were both lorry drivers.

This morning the BBC said it had received 517 complaints about the joke, with Ofcom also confirming that it had received an unspecified number of calls about the show.

The complaints come in the week after the corporation was shaken by the row over obscene phone calls on Radio 2, which saw Jonathan Ross suspended without pay for 12 weeks, and Russell Brand and Lesley Douglas, the station controller, resigned.

Prostitute welfare groups said that the remarks were insensitive. A spokeswoman from English Collective of Prostitutes said: "This is a truly heartless comment.”

Brian Tobin, director of the ICENI Project, an Ipswich charity that had worked with some of the prostitutes killed by Wright, said: “I just think it was highly distasteful and insensitive. Maybe people on the BBC should think a bit more before saying some of the things they keep coming out with.

“It is around the time of the anniversary of the girls’ deaths and it’s a very delicate time. I saw it on Top Gear. It made me cringe.”

But the head of one of Britain’s biggest haulage firms said it was just a joke and that lorry drivers should not be offended. Andrew Tinkler, CEO of Eddie Stobart Group, said: “They were just having a laugh. It’s the 21st Century, let’s get our sense of humour in line.”

A BBC spokeswoman said: “The vast majority of Top Gear viewers have clear expectations of Jeremy Clarkson’s long-established and frequently provocative on-screen persona.

“This particular reference was used to comically exaggerate and make ridiculous an unfair urban myth about the world of lorry driving, and was not intended to cause offence.”

yeh i read about it in the sun. Stobart group Well done for supporting the people with a sense of humour.

Hi All,

Read all of your comments with interest and I am glad to see that there is still real people out there after all.

Programme was very funny and I think the point was put across in the normal fantastic style by Clarkson and crew - Tong in cheek as always, no malice and scripted to create a reaction and raise an eyebrow and create laughter - after all it’s the best medicine. Comments made were a bit close to the knuckle, I’ll agree, (didn’t offend me), but that’s the normal style we all love, it’s what humour is all about, pushing the boundaries, it’s about time the do gooders of this country stopped trying to protect everybody from comedians, there’s worse out there, if you can’t laugh at yourself then it’s about time to give in.

Richard Hammond was taught to drive a truck by Scania also, when they launched the R Series, he made a promotional DVD for Scania, sent out to all those that were invited to the launch at Millbrook.

There should be more programmes like Top Gear on, to lift our spirits out of the doom and gloom - Well Done Top Gear - Keep up the good work.

Clarkson for Minister Of Transport I say !!!

Regards
Ant

This is a copy of the email I have sent to the show -

Fantastic episode. As a full time “lorryist”, with thankfully no ambition or opportunities to murder a prostitute (I do however harbour homicidial intentions towards Ken Livingstone and various MP’s) I wanted to write and congratulate you on portraying Trucks in an enjoyable and amusing way, which from speaking to other drivers is exactly what we (normal everyday people) who were the ■■■■ of the various jibes during the show, saw it as. Its only a joke - we all know its Fork Lift drivers that murder prostitutes!

I am led to understand that our “esteemed” representative body The Road Haulage Association has written a letter of complaint. Please feel free to do the same as the majority of this country and ignore this hollow and toothless organisation. It in no way represents any driver I know and should really be concentrating its efforts in a more worthwhile cause such as that “small” concern that is fuel and its ludicrous pricing which worries us a little bit more than a funny comment as lets face it, our jobs are going down the pan as we speak.

I know many other drivers feel the same as myself and feel free to confirm this on www.trucknetuk.com.

Once again thanks for a great show over the years and long may it continue unaffected by political correctness.

I’m off for a sit down (going to work)!

Seems that Andrew Tinkler is more in touch with drivers than the RHA. Oh! yea that because he actually might see a truck driver every do often.

of those 517 complaints about the joke, how many of them were lorryists?

none probably , but folk stuck in the dark ages of william wallace fighting against the english lol
