Too much in - cab technology

I’m doing this job 30 years. I used to use maps. Why bother now when a sat nav does it? Move with the times pops.

I have maps collected over the years…I also have a satnav which is indispensable in SOME cities… Places like London tho is a totally different ball game were you use everything available to you, Roadsigns, Maps, Satnavs but mostly your wits

Tech is great if used wisely… my biggest problem is the planners using Google maps… ■■■■■ drives me to dispare… and when I try to explain to them that my overall daily average speed is roughly 40mph I just get a blank look and the question " but I thought the speed limits have been raised" … head banging some days :unamused:

As per the title Too much in - cab technology they took me gear stick away :open_mouth: so I got less now

what gets me is when people in general assume you have sat nav ,the amount of times I have phoned the customer to ask where they are or the depot to see if they know and the first thing they say is hang on I will give you the postcode, when I say no point as I do not have sat nav they don’t know what to say,as the op says he has a sat nav for guidance only,i like him am old school and prefer maps if I have them

European drivers, some of which have maybe come over through god knows how many countries without one.

Your telling me london IS NOT sign posted from eastern europe? :open_mouth:

Also, my map book needs updating I cant find the new estates on it… but with a satnav its so much easyer (I do not own one or use one)

That annoys me too. “You should of been there now, it only takes 2 hours.” Yea, two hours in a car not a truck that is limited to 50.

A sat nav saved me 180 Mile round trip a while ago, girl in office (loosely termed planner) asked me to pop to Carnforth, so I trundle up the m6 then call the office for the postcode, first off she says LL I say that’s a Welsh postcode, she says “yes so what” I tell her she said Carnforth, she says oh I meant caernarfon and she said she always gets them mixed up… :unamused:

OK…DAD!

I hope not, we (four drivers) already do most of our own tweaking to the so called planning
should slit her money between us

I think sat navs are great for that last bit of the journey helping you find the right road etc. yes years ago we used maps but you could also stop and ask directions with out being caught on camera and a fine arriving in the post. Still can stop in rural areas where every body knows each other, it’s just in the urban jungle. Haha

One missing letter changes the whole sentence.

Agree, sat navs have taken the hassle out of the final bit of the journey. In my current job I can be sent anywhere so I personally use a truck sat nav, google maps/earth/street view on my phone, but I have a Phiilips truck map, that I always check when going on a unfamiliar route to check suitability, and never trust new technology 100%. The bottom line is if I’m unsure I will phone the customer, or get off my lazy arse and ask a local, I would rather that than look a Mr. D. Head.

Spot on, though I wish I could understand most locals

I aim at postmen/women or couriers for info near delivery addresses

Good job she didn’t get it mixed up with Carmarthen. (Though I would have thought confusing Caernarfon with Carmarthen is more likely than with Carnforth, and you wouldn’t want to have to get from one to the other.)
