How far back is your 5th wheel. May not be enough weight over the drive if your trailers too far back. I have 4 teeth showing with a container and don’t get any probs

1 thing everyone seem’s to agree on is there is no perfect truck. Talking about Iveco i would’nt mind trying a Stralis but only if i could give it back when i wanted. MAN where the most disapointing truck i ever had and i’ve tried 17.332 18.403 TGA.I do think the new TGX look’s the business though.

I’ve said it before. The Stralis is an underrated truck. A few weeks driving one and you might be a Stralis convert. They just break too easily if they are used as a fleet truck though!!!

When I first read the thread title I thought it was either going to be about North American Semi (sem-eye) trailers or something school boys used to talk about. Just needed the word “on” added.

… and if you want to be technical a Merc EPS - or whatever they call them now, isn’t actually a semi automatic. A semi auto is like buses used to be 20 odd years ago where you have to move a selector to change but do not use a clutch. Many more upmarket automatic cars can be driven that way today.

I have to say my Stralis is great, it is not only cost effective, but roomy (a lot more space than a premium) plenty of pull, and it has every extra factory fitted that you would ever want. However it is a little plastic inside and I would think if it is used by a few drivers it would get very tatty very fast.

5th wheel is set so pin is half way between the back and middle axle.Didnt want to move it with it not wanting to go round bends in the wet.Starlis look to plasticy for me dont need loads of room with not doing nights out.

Via choice i would have in no particular Volvo,Scania, Daf or Renault.Hate M.A.N with a passion ours are 440 bhp and wont hold top on cruise at 40 then they are up and down up and down all the time because they dropped them to a 9 litre so they dont need adblue.Mercs are comfy but apart from that they arent that good.Mine is rubbish on traction and if you are on a wet corner or roundabout it wants to send you straight on.Iveco i would never drive one of them in a month of sundays.

I found Mercs to be bad for that when you were loaded. Pressing the button on the dash to dump the air from the mid lift helped but can get quite annoying having to do it at every corner or roundabout. I’m sure I remember reading somewhere that running your mid lift tyres at a slightly lower pressure than the others would help overcome this problem. Not sure if its recommended or not though.

Forget the kingpin, get the fifth wheel horizontal pivot pins dead on with or forward of the point between the two axles…and

I run my midlifts at 105 psi, and only use well worn or cheepo tyres on it. Never had any problems with tyre failure, and don’t seem to get the problems of not wanting to turn on wet bends.

Tis a fact many run with with a sliding 5th wheel too far back. Another tell tale sign is if it starts to weave when you get up to 60+ dowhill.

At least i wasn’t imagining that theory!!!

Only ever had bad traction like this with Mercs and Man’s, strange that eh

Must be a German thing, as my BMW has issues as well

I agree, we have no choice in what wagons we drive and new fleet of stralis wagons started arriving I give up my xf, after 2 days my back was sore but it was just re adjusting I suppose as after a few weeks I was comfy and happy again. All of our drivers now agree give them 2 weeks and you won’t miss your old wagon! (you also learn to ignore the cheap build quality)

Thanks i will check it monday. Its odd how its ok in the dry though.I m the same only had the problem with mercs
