Thorpes of Thurgoland

Just a quicky are they still in business? with the Corus steel mill closing down nearby went past today plenty of trucks parked up??

Passed their place at Thurgoland twice yesterday, and there seemed to be plenty of activity.

Bear in mind it is Saturday and people do like to have time off you know.

i loaded for them last week they are still going well just run 45 trucks now
they are all a good set of lads always willing to help you
who says stocksbridge is closing thats were they mostly work from
my uncle works in the mill been there 31 year and he anit said anything about closing

Only the melting side of things closed down years ago at Stocksbridge, now the steel is brought in by rail in ingot form, from Aldwarke ( Rotherham)… I think the original plan was to close it full stop, and move all production to Aldwarke, but the top brass in charge who make these decisions, and I find this unbelievable, didn’t realise that Stocksbridge had a reversible rolling mill, so they could send the steel through, and then back again, the mill at Aldwarke was one way only, so they had to send it through mill, then take back round, on a train, and send it through again, and again. That’s what saved Stocksbridge from closing full stop…

there’s plenty of them in & out the steelworks at scunthorpe everyday

Yes definitely good for the age. I love the old seddons.

stocksbridge steelworks is not closing down :confused: tata steel invested 6 million back end of last year in the works! thorpes still going strong doing alot of plate and wire out of scunthorpe and steel strip out of brinsworth strip mills i know afew drivers there, tidy wagons for old ones they pay around £7.50 an hour and time and half after 8 hours not best wages but more than what some blue chip companys pay…
