THIRD of DVLA workers are STILL not at their desks

Why the rush to get back into the office? I gain over 8 hours a week by NOT travelling to the office.

That’s probably what motivates DVLA staff to work from home rather than any genuine fear of the virus. But the thing is that DVLA staff are not carrying out the function of their organisation sufficiently efficiently to be allowed to carry on doing this, and their behaviour is adversely affecting hundreds of thousands of people who need driving licences, including particularly those who depend on one for a living.

It may be contentious to say it, but people in South Wales have a very poor work ethic. Driver and vehicle licencing should, in my opinion, be carried out on a national basis so that English and Scots drivers are dealt with by offices in England and Scotland, leaving Swansea to deal with Welsh licence holders only.

agree one hundred percent dvla is not fit for purpose it needs disbanding and regional offices set up they are a waste of space

We HAD regional offices but they closed them all down years ago. And very useful they were.

I was going to type out a long and reasoned response to this but thought you probably wouldn’t understand it ,what with being from a low intellect country and all

Its a bit contentious yes Harry, how many of these south wales types have you actually met? Or did they just give you that impression?

Well, I’ve been loading out of South Wales since the days when there were coal mines and steelworks. And these are a bit of a clue here, DVLA was set up as a sop by Mrs Thatcher in exchange for closing down industry. However, whereas it used to be the menfolk who mined coal and made steel, it is their wives who largely do the office-based work at DVLA while the menfolk stay at home watching daytime TV and taking heroin.

There’s bound to be resentment there and this, coupled with the generally bolshie Socialist attitude and innate anti-English racism of the average Welsh person is only ever destined to lead to problems for many of their “customers”.

From a man who has to live on his own in a tin box because no one will tolerate his presence for more than 48 hrs.
Fair play I’ve read some absolute excrement on the web in my time but that has to be close to the bottom of the pile

I find that the majority of folk I meet/know who live on their own or indeed avoid people altogether whenever possible, are the smartest of all. 90% of people are not worth a carrot.

I much prefer animals over human beings.

We all live in a box. His just happens to float.

As for the DVLA situation…
I do feel bad for the technophobes and illerate people these days.
I know plenty of people who can not read or read and can not use a computer.
But the government and its rush to put everything online / automated does not seem to care for them.
When I phoned DVLA recently after getting their phone number from their website I got told by the automated phone system to use their website then it hung up on me.

DVLA (then called DVLC) was established in Swansea in 1965, under Harold Wilson’s Labour government and some 10 years before Thatcher even got a place on the front benches. The local offices around the country remained until 2013, the year Mrs Thatcher died and more than 20 years after she left Number 10.

The lad next door has never gone back to the office ( council I think ) & his mum only goes in 2 days a week since COVID started , both really enjoying the new way of working

A haulier friend of mine has been interviewed twice by the BBC about the ‘driver shortage’ and its causes.

In each case, he said his biggest problem was slow turnarounds at Swansea.

In both cases, those remarks were edited out of the broadcast. When they called him for an interview the third time, he declined, telling them there was no point as they were not reporting what he said.

It causes me pain to say this, but BBC reporting should not be trusted.

The BBC is and always has been the UK Government’s propaganda department. It’s about as balanced and impartial as Radio Moscow or Al-Jazeera. It is not going to broadcast opinion critical of another Government division.

We used to have regional offices for HGV licencing, and yes much better it was too, you could visit and be served in a reasonable time frame just as you could the various local vehicle licencing offices that i believe every county had.
All had to go, much too efficient.

When I bought a vehicle in 2002 I went to the LVLO in Norwich and everything was done with no delays, however once the paperwork arrived at Swansea there was problem after problem and it took about eight weeks to get the V5.

Fast forward 8 1/2 years to April 2011 and I get a letter from DVLA informing me that there was a query with the engine cc.
