Thinking I’ve Had Enough…

I know someone that is a domacilary carer. She was on the same hourly rate i was over the recent bank holiday.
They only get paid for the time they are in peoples houses in 15 min blocks. dont get paid travel time only a small fuel allowance. they have to deal with rude clients that will spit and swear at them. shower them lift and move them about deal with bodily waste if the client is inconternent etc etc. then they have to get to the next client on time with 5 mins to get from one side of town to the other. always be cheerfull no matter what kind of day they are having etc etc.

my bank jolliday work comprised of a gentle drive up the m25, m11, a14 a1 drop a trailer read my book for 30 min while my other trailer was being loaded and then drive back tip and back to the yard. only hassel i had was trying to reverse te thing. all for the same hours at the same rate

i know which i prefer

Years ago I had a carer come to help my now late Mother. I would offer her a sit down and a cup of tea. She always refused said that she just couldnt stop , didnt have time for tea. ! I often watch films go for a short walk etc.

I wonder when lorry driving became a ‘lifestyle’ ? I left England in 1974 and never heard the job called a lifestyle, either local or long distance. My mates and I didn’t consider it a lifestyle but a job that entailed you being away from home a few days.

I suspect it’s another ‘Americanism’ creeping into your everyday language. :stuck_out_tongue:

It’s not a lifestyle; but it is, for many of us, more a way of life than a job.

If you’re working away as, say, an engineer, you get put up in hotels or lodgings where you have access to toilets and washing/bathing facilities without having to trudge across a wet MSA lorry park; you probably have an expense account or allowance so that you can pick and choose where and what you eat. You probably don’t have to start at silly o’clock in the morning, and you’ve got a better idea than most of us lorry drivers as to what day and at what time of day you will get home. You will probably avoid being spoken to by jobsworths in a manner which I would not inflict on a dog turd. It is also unlikely that, once you have arrived at the place where you’re working, you will be turned away if you’re either too late, too early or if some idiot forgot to tell them you were coming.

Not sure any employment is now left untouched by the ever encroaching tide of bureaucracy and middlemen wanting a slice of everything you earn.

I had a few different careers in the UK and lastly had my own business, which became mired in regulation as everything else has.

One thing I noticed was the outstanding pattern of control and control of everything including the people…This is not good for anyone and the controls that most complied with during covid made my mind up for me and I left the UK.

Having being a ■■■■■■-analyst in a previous life I was more than aware of the damage that would be done to society at every level and how this would be capitalised upon by those who would see us dumbed down further in the name of their greater financial wealth.

There is only one thing you can do when faced with the futility of life and that is make changes of yourself and your environment, doing the same thing day after day and expecting it to improve is actually madness, insanity and never ends well, you have to take control. Taking control is difficult, but once you take the first step the rest follow and the feeling of liberation and the freedom that brings is living!

My life has changed beyond all recognition and it has been difficult and will continue to be so, but now I can sleep and have lost 20K in weight and am more active, eating better and away from all media and controlling my feed on my computer…My psychological state is back to where I would like it to be and I am relaxed for the first time in probably 40 years.

Change is where it is at, but it is not for the feint hearted…I can only hope that these words will help.

Most some useful replies. But think of it like this- if this industry is so great, why aren’t people queuing up to do it?…
Please enlighten me…because I seem to recall there’s been a labour shortage even before that vote we had in 2016…

Can’t see where any of us have said the job is ‘‘so great’’ mate, on the contrary in fact, most of us who have done a bit can see it for what it is.
IF there IS a shortage, it’s for a couple of reasons, including EE drivers going back home, which on the whole was beneficial pay wise,.and the CPC where many good experienced drivers (and a few bad ones  ) said ‘’[zb] this,.I’m off.
If they want these disenchanted exoerienced drivers to return to the job,.'( as they do judging by the written 'invites) ’ scrap,.suspend, or at least show it ain’t primarily a money making excercise ('it clearly is btw :unamused: ) by letting drivers automatically qualify for it every 5 years, or at least cut this 40 hours ■■■■■■■■ down to about 1x8 hour session.

As for new young drivers,.who tf in their right mind wants to start a career where you’re expected to work 2 week’s hours in one…cut the ridiculously long hours down.
I see by comments you were a bus driver, surely that job was half the hours,.so what possesd you?

It’s all well and good saying cut the ridiculous hours down and to a certain extent I agree, but unless I max out my hours then I won’t be taking home a good wage.

Depends what you’re willing to accept for an hourly rate?

I get £13.25 an hour on dayshift rate but the depot is a couple of minutes away from my house. I could get a higher rate if I travel a bit further but it would cost me more in fuel to get there so I’d lose out.

In part the low wages and the long hours in road transport are an intertwined chicken and egg situation, which is why you don’t see ASLEF campaigning for train drivers to work longer hours.

Must admit, ive never had a problem with VOSA/DVSA or the police, cannot understand the hate for them.

I’m assuming by a '‘good wage’ you mean a wage you are able to live on and have a bit left over.
No offence.but I reckon if the only way to do that was me HAVING to max out every week, I’d be asking questions about, and addressing my lifestyle, commitments and expenditure.
Most people i know outside the job think long hours are around 50ish, ie 8 hours a day with two hours overtime paid at time + half. not over 70 or so every week, let alone same rate right through as in many driving jobs.
I cut my hours down to around 50 per week a couple of years ago, it must be the only job where 50 is an hour cut as opposed to an increase. :unamused:

I am fortunate that your question does not apply to me as I square wheeled a long time ago.
However I reading through everyone’s post I note quotes of fast cash for things like delivering Pizza, However that may be ok for a short while but in the long run you will need stable full time employment, so when you retire your Old Age Pension is not all you will be struggling to live on !!

  Perhaps you can get a Government job, they all seem to get well paid for doing nothing
