The Tipper Drivers Gripes Thread

Currently parked at Chieveley Services and a Maritime driver just said to me “do tipper drivers do that?” -I was cleaning my lights/reflectors. He was only joking and I replied “Some of us do and some of us don’t run flatout everywhere”…I must be the odx one out

I was looking at some of Clark Contractings’ lorries last week; What is the point of lining alloy bodies with wood? For a start, the point of an alloy body is to make it lighter, so putting wood in it makes it heavy. Secondly, muck sticks to wood like ■■■■ to a blanket so why not just use a lightweight steel body?
I was told yesterday, that Black Horse Contractors of Cricklade have gone bust. It was on local news so it’s not a rumour, last workers were being laid off yesterday. I’ve done muckshifting and ag deliveries for them, they always seemed a good firm.

Link confirming the above. Colingl Black Horse Contractors calls in administrators - BBC News

Why do ex drivers who become planners suddenly forget what it’s like to drive lorries??

They get the feeling of power and think they are superior beings :smiling_imp:  .

I remember a batcher at Cemex who said if it was his wife he’d poison her…and a driver said he’d drink the poison himself

Since going on general haulage I’m working a lot more hours for the same money. Change of direction needed before long lol

Our TM was telling me yesterday that tippers working on Crossrail project have to have underrun bars, and that MPQC (EPIC) are considering making it compulsory for their members. From what he told me, our lot are (rightly) against this and rightly so, more weight added when tare weights keep rising as lorries get more modern. For the drivers, he said it would be one more place to have to clean debris off and make it easier to ground on tips. I would guess our lot would have to leave said organisation if they made it compulsory. Yet another example of someone with a useless degree having to justify their existence… :imp:

Excuse my ignorance, what is the purpose of an underun bar?

Side underruns to stop cyclists polishing your wheels. Mixers have them.

Ahh right, i know the ones you mean now. Think its a pointless fitting them on tippers to be honest. There would hardly be any space for them on an 8wheeler anyway.

As pointless as those relective strips on the tipper sides.

Somebody clearly wasn’t fooled by the old “put the rubbish on the bottom and cover it with soil” trick…

Indeed they do have to have under run bars and front and rear strobes, louder reverse warning left turn warning speaker that screams caution truck turning left stickers on both side of the cab warning to keep away from vehicle and on top of that you have to have a full day induction we do quite a bit for cross rail

A gripe…

Turn up on site in a 6 wheeler to deliver screed, inform the ‘site operatives’ that I can’t get the truck where they want me to tip. The old chestnut of “we had an artic in here a few weeks ago” is then thrown at me. My reply is that the said artic was delivering the bricks that the houses I can’t get behind are now made out of… and don’t get me started on the renegade scaffolders who randomly use 6ft tubes where a 4ft tube would suffice… the 2ft overhang doesn’t really stand out well at 6am in the dark does it?

Why do builders insist on building ornate pillars and hanging expensive gates on them, when the site itself has barely started?
House builders; Build the houses near the entrance, so when the residents move in they block the road to site vehicles.
Have to laugh at the “house occupied, please be considerate” signs, yet where are the “residents, park considerately, site traffic” signs?

Why do ground worker’s build a road out instead of a road in? Having to drive across heaps of ■■■■ and risk getting stuck to tip stone on a road instead of them starting at the entrance and working inwards!
Also the house holder who complains about you parking outside his house while the next one is being built, just used to tell them that “your neighbour complained about that while yours was being constructed as well” which usually shut them up!
