The Dreaded Nodders

‘…I thought The Dreaded Nodders were a Slade tribute band   …’

It reminded me of an old euphemism for condoms when shy lads would nod toward them and make vague mumbling sounds when in the chemist’s or at the barber’s, etc.

I have tried everything to avoid nodding off. singing, shouting, loud music, window open, slapping face, stamping feet, dancing, eating, drinking redbull, pro plus. nothing is working.I’m gonna end up having an accident sooner or later.

Don’t do it mate. If you’re big enough and sensible enough to admit you’re not cut out for the big shunt with your eyes hanging out of your head, then I for one respect you.

For those who don’t remember it, the lads who were honest and went to bed when they had no more to give are the only ones who are still around to tell the stories.

Know what I mean?

I was given nights on agency in November, was no sign of anything else so I said yes I’d do it. Tried it for 2 weeks and I couldn’t do it.
Ended up with nothing for 3 weeks over Christmas but was better than being dead!

Exactly mate. If it’s not for you, who cares? Find something you like and you’ll have a much better life!

I’ve never had falling asleep problems working nights. Weird that.

On this job some of our drivers will actually drive non stop for 11 hours :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth:
I refuse to drive more than 4.5 hours without stopping. If it’s a ‘through the night’ run I will set out for the 6.5 - 7 hour drive from NYC to St Albans and leave with enough time to take 2 hours sleep if needed. I find that if I get the nods just stopping at a safe spot and setting the alarm for even 15 minutes sleep will help, it’s amazing how little reset sleep can give you that extra few hours of zip. If I see some guy drifting because he is nodding off I slow up, flash my lights and if I can get by I sound the horn too… Mind you ! a lot of the time the guys just talking on his phone and oblivious to everything else.

I find that having a CB conversation (with an intelligent driver) will keep me wide awake.

With only working two night shifts a week being semi retired,I don’t get into a regular “Night shift” sleep pattern.
I find that two “Energy plus”,(Caffeine) tablets before I start a shift let me do a 14 hour shift without a yawn.
THESE ARE NOT HABIT FORMING,but I suppose you could get into the habit of using them.
I used to try a tin of “Red Bull”,but three things,
a.It tastes ■■■■■■■ awful!
b.It didn’t stop me yawning for all that long.
c.As a type 2 diabetic,it’s just toooooo much sugar.

That’s some distance…

Pat,how far is it from Miami to New York in a truck,i would load them while working in Cooper City,FLA while working at the plantation, trees for for the shopping malls, and how far to L.A.

Meanwhile, the stuff sends personal emotions into turmoil; knackers one’s bone density and exacerbates osteoporosis in many - the highest number of sufferers being the USA where caffeine is arguably the ultimate king of poor mental and physical health.

Abuse it at peril :smiling_imp: :exclamation:

I tried drinking red bull (or similar) when a did nights. Didn’t stop me being tired and just made me feel quite ill

Red Bull was banned in France for a long time, some teenagers overdosed on it and had heart attacks.

whilst at work last night I discovered that listening to the discography of ‘system of a down’ worked a treat at keeping the nodders at bay. Didn’t even have a yawn.

Interesting thread this, some comments a little worrying but we all think it won’t happen to us…
