The classic 12-metre tandem spread-axle tilt

I seem to remember a film about that. These could well be ‘stills’ from it.

Note the air con pod on the cab roof, they are mandatory in some European countries to prevent excessive engine idling all night to run the fan blowers inside the cab, with some companies banning engine idling, and to help the environment with emissions.

I think that is very different to the night coolers on current cab roofs.
Isn’t that a proper air-con with an engine driven heat pump and insulated pipes between the engine and the roof unit?

Current night coolers are sometimes fully electric and will drop the temp a bit, but not as much as an engine powered air con. Some are evaporation types and some are solid state coolers like cool boxes.

That is the heat pump and insulated pipes linked to the engine in the photo , the modern pods are so quiet to enable a good night’s sleep.

That’s very old history. Roof-mounted Kysor air-cons went out in the '80s. Lorries have had inboard air-cons for decades now.

I meant to say the inboard units are quieter.

Give it a rest Tobes
