Flash!..Good lord girl get some swarfega but dont wet your hands until you’ve rubbed it well in.
A touch of diesel on a rag dipped in the top of your tank will move that grease better than anything although I wouldn’t make a habit of it as it buggers up some peoples skin.

Oh,and well done on a damage free job which is the top priority.

Gonna see if I can find you a song…

I really need to sleep. I read that last word as ‘snog’ lol

Well I would but you’re so far away honey

How’s life on the wild side cuz?

ShropsBri:
How’s life on the wild side cuz?

All going really well mate. Just getting to grips with fare stages.

Oh and the recovery truck gets a lot of use :-/. I’m glad they take their maintenance role seriously though as they 9 times out of 10 will pull a bus off the road if you ain’t happy driving it for even the slightest fault.

Well that’s good news…even if you are stuck behind a wagon most of the time

the songs by Ferlin Husky Jennie…

Jen,
you did good … when I got my first class one job it was for road ways containers based in Barking East London.

they sent me to BAT (British American Tobbacco) in Didcot Oxford way, it tyook me 45 minutes to reverse on the bay I could not do it for love nor money, I just couldnt had all the old boys who have been there done it watching me.
I said if you think you can do better you back it on for me, then an old boy said ignore them [zb] laughing at you and nursed me through it, never forget his advice it is a totally different life when reversing on bays in real life and not the test bay with no other trucks etc,

you will get called back in btw great truck to start in a XF!!!

Jennie:
well i must of tried umpteen times and the trailer would go all over the place but where I wanted it to be , shunter was trying to help but i croaked and in the end the other guy had to put it on for me and that ruined the whole thing for me im still beating myself up now

Don’t worry too much. If a driver tells you they’ve never had a nightmare reverse, they’re lying. It’s experience and confidence, you only get it by driving more.

Jennie:
so think im gonna have to practice more or just stick to ridgids if I cant even get on a bay.

You’ll get your practice from driving artics more and doing different runs. It’s a good idea to try to practice in the yard but the best way is simply doing more Class 1 jobs.
I’ve been driving Class 1’s just over 7 years now, since I was 26 and I still balls the odd reverse up. I just know that if I relax and give it another go, I’ll get it on. If an artic can go there, I can do it.
Chin up and crack on, you’re a Class 1 driver!

Two things I was told when I passed my HGV…

1 - You start to learn to drive AFTER you pass

2 - The most important thing when you go to work is YOU GET HOME SAFELY

Well done, every run you make is a learning curve, don’t panic about it, just do your best and enjoy it

Well guys one song for me earlier but think my song should be this Box Car Willie song for now lol , thanks for all your comments and i feel a lot better now and cant wait to get another call but for now i think ill keep singing this ::

keep on truckin ya all

juggernaut Jen

It sounds to me you did very well on your first solo c+e job. Im sure you will get asked back. Very soon.
Mike

Hi Jen,
Sounds like you are a competent Class 1 driver to me  as you have learned from your little hiccups….well done. Anyone on here, even the old school would be telling porkies if the said they never made a cockup at some time  I’m quite confident when it comes to reversing but as I said in one of my posts the other week, I completely ballsed up on a drivers side reverse that should have been a doddle…it happens
You collected, made the delivery and returned the lorry with no damage and no accidents, that’s 4 ticks in the most important boxes in my eyes. Get yourself back in the saddle girl don’t even consider giving up with the big girls (boys) toys.
All the best,
RichardJ

That makes for a nice read Jen well done

As for the trailer brake - well we’ve all done that

In fact if you go into anywhere that uses a shunter you will find more often than not the brakes are off

well done jen…and a great xf wagon that was.

my first run went pretty ‘well’ it was the 2/3/4/5 runs i totally messed up :open_mouth:

at one point on 2nd run two drivers who i was blocking got out and said what the hell your taking an hour to couple up! the king pin was in engaged position, that explained why i couldnt hear the ‘click’ another classic, on my first run after, and bear in mind i took my test 7 years prior to my first artic run, i left the suzzies on the trailer when i dropped it and went off to pick up another trailer 5 mins from the yard. i got a call 15 mins later saying ‘youve left all the suzzies here’…i saw a driver from the yard passing me by with a big grin and laughing!

its all part of the learning curve! and that company still had me back!

practise makes perfect
o and baby wipes are great for getting the grease off

Well just to update , u can all go into smug mode and say told u so
Had a call last night , night freight wanted me to go in class 1 again , unfortunately could not do it as had taxi commitments for today but I’m pleased that they were gonna give me another go , so hopefully will be available next time , so all you newbies don’t worry so much as long as you do the job without losing any paint that’s a job well done !

Jen x

And she scores…It get’s easier from here ya know, everything does.

I know which one I would have pulled a sicky on…

First off, well done Jen! The thing that most impressed me most was your willingness to seek help when in doubt. If I can only offer one piece of advice to other newbies it’s to follow Jens’ example.

Don’t beat yourself up about mistakes we all made them and keep finding new ones to make! We usually learn most from them. There is much to remember and when you’re inexperienced that adds to the pressure and can cause you to forget something. What about creating a wee checklist for yourself to carry with you as memory jogger?

Sam Millar:
I know which one I would have pulled a sicky on…

  Sam would have loved too but basic economics I can earn more doing taxi jobs and as have 2 teenagers to feed need the money

44 tonne : I knew had done everything it was wether Id done it right  without an instructor by my side just doubted that everything was connected properly , but your right better to ask and not cause damage
