THAMES TRADERS

Was this photo taken many years ago when the Gearless Leyland Tiger of Lytham Corporation was still in service or are the bystanders watching an early vintage vehicle rally. ?

Cheers Leyland 600

The paintwork on the bus looks brand new but the dress, Trader & horse & cart put it around late '50s early '60s, I reckon.

hiya,
Just surprised the houses haven’t got those huge X and H television aerials strapped
to the chimneys I know there was plenty around us from around the mid 50s could
be it’s a skint area and they couldn’t afford a gogglebox. PS my mistake there is an
aerial on the roof above the bus cab only visible when blowing up the photo.
thanks harry, long retired.

Click on the photo Harry, you can just see the lashing kit and aerial poles on the chimneys in the row of houses next to the shop.
Cheers Dave.

hiya,
Dave had already edited the previous post with a postscript saying
after blowing up the picture i could see the aerial bits.

The Leyland is a pre war model and pre-dates the Trader by almost 29 years I guess, being a Lytham bus they were always kept immaculate hence the new look. This bus still exists in preservation appearing at various bus rallies from time to time.
Cheers Leyland 600

Certainly looks good for a 30year old bus. Any recent photos around?

That’s a blast from the past Eh, County Garage Carlisle, On the of the roundabout heading south into Carlisle, Regards Larry.

Quality photo Trader recovering Trader coach,I passed my test on same sort of coach in sep 73 Ford Duple reg around 1960 examiner came to the yard took me out as far as Kirkby Lonsdale bit of reversing, hill start never saw a traffic light, roundabout or zebra xing no written exam just Highway Code n off you went straight out with a pink slip not like nowadays you need an exam just to open the door #whotrainsthetrainer

I used to drive one of those coaches occasionally. They were quite smooth to drive but ours had a problem with the non-return valve that they fitted. After it had been standing for a few hours it would come to a complete stop about ten minutes after you had resumed your journey. Favourite place for this was climbing the hill into Alton after visiting Alton Towers. The owner wouldn’t get it looked at because he said it never happened when he was driving it!
He did, however manage to wreck the gearbox (5-speed Turner, I believe) so tried to save a shilling or two by buying one from a scrapper. It wasn’t until I gave it a bit of a road test that we discovered that he had bought a 5-speed with crawler gear instead of the overdrive version. Back to square one!

13 - Copy - Copy.JPGHi Lawrence, Here are some pics of the County Garage, Carlisle and the cold winter of 1963 when dozens of wagons were held at Carlisle and Penrith unable to cross Stainmoor and or Shap until the council got the road cleared. Cheers Leyland 600.

And no night heaters leyland!

Hi Greek, True night heaters had not been invented, however there were lots of drivers digs just across the road in Peter St and Corporation Road plus lots more in London Rd.
Cheers , Leyland 600.
