Well that’s me ■■■■■■ then. On the road for 23 years doing general haulage, containers, drayman, removals, tippers etc.,
but because I took a job on the trolleys to pay the bills for a while I’m now officially brain-dead.
This post is a little too generalised in my opinion. There’s about 160 odd drivers in where I am, and you couldn’t meet such
a varied bunch of drivers. Guys who’ve ran all over Europe etc, are steering dolleys for whatever reason just now. I think this
post should be directed at the one’s who come through the gates in the morning planning what they won’t be doing, instead of
what they could get done.
God forbid, in a time of crisis you might have to trolley yourselves for a wee while in the future like I had to !!!
Talking of own drivers stretching the job out. Some years ago i did a few months agency work for Tesco at NDC Milton Keynes. Quite enjoyed it actually, it was good money for a very easy day’s work.
I remember one day being given a trunk run to Magor.
Some hours later i walked back in the office & plonked the paperwork down at the desk.
The traffic clerk looked up at me & in a very suprised fashion said: “I thought you were going to Magor?”
To which i simply replied, “Yes, that’s right. I’ve been.” I did not exceed the lawful or co. speed limits.
Now that just shows how their own drivers were stringing the hours out.
I then asked him for another job to get some more hours in & he duly obliqued.
Another day, coming back accross country in the dark, i overshot the A5 but didn’t realise i had. Got quite disorientated (most unusual for me, as my inbuilt navigation works quite well).
Had to phone the office & ask them to look at the computer to see where i was.

HA Ha. Done it many times through the years mate. Either thinking about something indoors, or too into the radio or music.
■■■■, a dolley AND forgetful. " I’M DOOMED "
I don’t think its anything of a open Discussions board,to force Drivers to ilegal Speed,or blame such who do Legal
We have 2010,and the Law,as well as the Publique and Media sends a clear Message. If anyone in a Office or other Position has a Problem with Planing then shall they employ someone who brings that Straight.
Remember,if anyone is Death by an Accident you were over Speedlimit you are liabel of mansloughter.Thats not a Offence anymore.its counted today as Crime.
Any Question? Ask the Legal Administration of www.trucknetuk.com
Sorry that i forwarded a link to a Message board but i had to make my point,as it nerves me that many try clipping the Mirror when you get overtaken by driving a legal Speed on a single cariage way

If anyone on here has an official letter or memo from an employer stating that they must drive at 40 mph on a motorway then please PM me as I have someone waiting to take this matter further.
sorry - that is all I can say.
Our speeds aren’t monitored unless the tacho shows an overspeed.
As for who’s the quickest, try following an Asda motor going to Elgin and then tell me that we dawdle along the road…
you do though, you get in my bloody way with my RM motor, your only doing 56mph
dessy:
I must be a Lorry driving genius then as i do General haulage a little trunking and store deliveries all in the same week.Tesco trolley dollies only have themselves to blame when they turn their cushty jobs to S***E by hanging the hell out of one drop or refusing to go beyond 9 hours as what they were doing at Middlewich and Tesco got shot of them So Mark is correct the trolley dollies don’t even have the work ethics of a real Trucker
Got to agree with dessy, I do a bit of everything, and, TBF the great “employed” @ Tossco really do have an issue with doing a fair days work
Some of the hanging out the job stunts are quite embarrasing, why don`t they just get on with it, and, be less bothered what their fellow employees think back at the ranch ■■?
Tossco arent stupid, thats why they are opening new DCs on new T+Cs or using ESL, as its cheaper, and more productive
I have to do 40/50/55, as the ISOTRACK tells the penguins exactly what ive been doing, PLUS, Im paid by the hour…
At what point did i stop being a truck driver just because i drive for Sainsburys?.
Ive been driving trucks since i was 18 year old, hgv 1 since i was 21,ive done tippers, low loaders, long loads ,wide loads movement order, plant work ,construction, hiab crane ,and general haulage, roping & sheeting (how many cocky ‘truck drivers’ have done that? )
Im a truck driver, be it for Sainsburys or anybody else as long as i have a license to do so.
Dont tar us all with the same brush thank you, i dont drive for supermarkets because i enjoy it.I do it because it keeps my kids in clothes and a roof over our heads!
As far as i can see most of the so called truckers are driving big flashy Scania/Volvo’s throwing their weight about.
Im a Sainsburys driver and every bit as good as you or anybody else!
The only tossers on here are the ones who think they’re better because of what they drive.

im doing 56.1mph and want past
Its hard to force someone driving faster,as its your Fall if anything hapens. He always could say:“There made me driving a Speed i didn’t feel well!”,but,to force on slowing down can be miss-understood and results in 40mph on a empty Motorway.
Its just bad if you cant overtake
I said that there were exceptions to the rule, I’m sure there are many lorry drivers driving supermarket lorries around, but the rest of what I’ve said still stands, now Happy Keith ( yes I get the irony ) Mick Palmer & others, I’m not picking on anyone specifically, it would be foolish to tar all with the same brush, in fact I’ve been a trolly dolly myself on two seperate occaisions, first at tesco, Snodland, that was like a continental driver’s retirement home, secondly at Welham Green, I was a sub contractor there with my own lorry & the Tesco drivers didn’t talk to us, but that’s another story & this post is about tossers that do 40mph on a motorway & it is to them that I refer. as to Mick’s comments about big flash Volvos & Scanias, well every single supermarket ‘trolley’ with the exception of the day cabs, is more powerful & has a bigger cab & more creature comforts than lorries that I & many others like me used to spend weeks away on the continent in, so you’re all driving big flash motors to me
I’ve just retired after 50 years in transport. Like many others on this forum I have driven a variety of trucks on a variety of jobs. I started as a Trailer mate and worked my way up. I worked on mileage bonus for many years and finished off at Asda. One opinion I have held for many years is that drivers are their own worst enemies when it comes to progressing their own standards and futures and that of their families.
Lorry driving is a responsible vocation, if you doubt this listen to the Police, Vosa or Judges who pass sentence on any driver brought into court.
While other trades, Joiners, Electricians, Plumbers etc. have made sure that their pay packets reflect responsibility and skill levels, Lorry drivers seem to set their standards mainly by how fast they can go. Many of the comments on this forum demonstrate this attitude. If the only or main consideration you have is limited to speed you are underselling yourself. If you, as a professional driver do not believe that you are worth the same pay, respect and standing in society as other highly skilled workers then you cannot expect others to give you that respect or remuneration. In other words you get what you think you are worth, and deserve. You don’t see many Joiners and Plumbers flying about or dealing with half the traffic and other problems you are exposed to for a full working day.
Yes when you get back early the Transport Manager will give you a pat on the back and a load of bull about how good you are, it’s cheaper than paying you £20 per hour like a true tradesman would get. As a professional driver in modern day driving conditions you can be the difference in life or death situations every minute of your driving day, you do this under extremely stressful situations and for long periods.
Lorry drivers should be paid and treated as valuable craftsmen in an increasingly complex and frustrating industry. Your value, worth and contribution to the productivity and lifeblood of this and every country is inestimable. Until YOU appreciate and value yourselves as such you will continue to be near the bottom of the pile and the public at large will never appreciate your true value.
That is very well put accross Yorkshireman and the content is spot on.
If somebody advertised a full time job driving a blinged up 500bhp V8 topline Scania for £250 a week, you can bet some idiot would take the job. Which then ofcourse totally devalues their true worth.
Meanwhile other more astute TN members drive more ordinary yellow co. liveried trucks for £700 a week.

I’ve yet to see a trolley doing 40mph on a motorway but i’m in their club as we have trackers and it gives out a loud bleep if the driver is blind and a red LED flashes if the driver is deaf to let him know if he is transgressing the speed limits for that road in his truck, i dont have a problem with it - i like my points free licence and it keeps my score down on the masternaught system . but i dont like doig 40mph, i like to do 42mph and have never been moaned at
but since sat tracking is normally 2-3mph out you can do 43 mph and the system will on register 40mph as ive seen the computer software in action and on the motorway we can only do 52mph, cruise control on - arm rest down and just plod along, my opinion now is if tommy tanker or ralph the reefer want to overtake they will and they do, let them get caught by the mobile speed camera around the corner.
