Tesco strike part 2

Same at my DC all the reps apart from one are on the old contract. The one on the new contract wasn’t allowed at the pay negotiations.

What’s all this about “Suspension of Staff Discount for March”?

Is there a wave of new recruits incoming, which, because they are on some kind of “Probation” - don’t then qualify for access to the staff discount scheme, which was only for full timers in the FIRST place, the way I understood it?

We hear a lot about the cushy old contract, but there is scant detail of what any new directly-employed full time contracts with Tesco actually involve, the mere existance of same - not being very well publicised, by the looks of it…

“Warehouse Staff Now Being hired” - doesn’t tell you much, certainlly not enough to get the average college/university leaver 20-year-old to take the exit off the roundabout to find out…

You get an annual limit of amount of discount to use, a pot if you like. It’s not unlimited staff discount forever more but its still fairly hard to hit. So for example I got around £10 discount yesterday on my shopping, that comes out of my pot etc and once its gone its gone.

The suspension means that the limit has been lifted so those who have used their pot can carry on getting discount until the start of the new pot in April.

Regarding the new contract, which I’m on, what do you want to know? What I will say is that it works out better in the pay packet compared to what it looks like on paper.

I don’t work for Tesco so I have no frame of reference with regards to wages, but leaving aside drivers for a moment it’s obvious to me from last week that Tesco have severe problems in recruiting or retaining warehouse staff, I’ve delivered to both Daventry and Doncaster (frozen) this week and from the horses mouth my four hour plus turn around times have been caused by a lack of warehouse staff and their inability to recruit them.

My inexpert opinion is that they (Tesco) need to seriously improve the package on offer to solve this problem.

Why oh why are these “Packages” so complicated, with strings attached like a combination of spaghetti custard pie in the face, followed by a serenade played on pieces of string, rather than the orchestral kind?

It would be nice to see contracts like:

40 hours per week, £■■■ per hour, pick from the following shift patterns - Permaent Nights, Permanent Days, Rotate - Shifts start at 3hr intervals.

Winseer:

  • Shifts start at 3hr intervals.

I was offered a fixed start time, ok so it was any 5 from 7, at Tesco. Can’t expect much more than that?

I said any 5 from 7 as it’s easier to describe, but it’s actually a fixed rota so you would know which days in advance for the following year.
To me, 4 on 4 off would be the best.

Nothing is easy to describe to Winseer unless it’s within his own very rigid parameters…

After what must be 3/4 yrs I got rang & asked if I was still interested in a job at Tesco Peterborough ( I never was I applied with agency for xpo not Tesco )
It seems all these supposed pay rises aren’t filling drivers seats , which in my experience of Tesco work is no surprise
Hopefully they got the message this time , I’d rather shovel ■■■■ than work for that shower

Horses for courses mate. I’d rather do a 9hr shift and then go home these days. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea but it does for me.

What didn’t you like about it dozy?

I’ve managed to get 1 Sunday shift every fortnight with them on agency to try to build some experience while I still work full time (non-driving), and as a first job in the industry I think I’ve been pretty lucky so far. No time pressures, clean work, and good instructions for every delivery, which as a new pass should hopefully help me avoid any major cockups!

Interested to know why a lot of people don’t like it.
