I never saw a tanker driver walking round with a ■■■ in his mouth on any of your photos
cheers Johnnie

I saw plenty in my days.

Me too, even fuel tanker drivers smoked a pipe.

My strangest feeling was in ICI Runcorn loading Trike and asked about the smoke room, the bloke said you can smoke here, it felt quite strange lighting a ■■■ while stood on top of the loading gantry :open_mouth:

I remember a driver on BP who smoked a pipe, hes retired now but not that long ago. Everybody that smoked who worked on the petrol used to smoke in the cab at one time. If you flicked the dog ends out the window they used to make little grey marks on the tank where they had bounced off. I always used baccy tin as an ashtray so there where no give away marks cos it was still banned but not enforced too keenly.

It seems strange these days thinking back at how we used to do things, and only 10 years or so back. I know Trike and Perk dont burn, but its crazy to think of a company like ICI letting you smoke while loading chemicals, I bet you cant do it now. Probably a sacking offence to even have a lighter on you in the plant.

Most large companies took your lighter/matches off you went you weighed in - ICI, Esso,Shell,LOR,BP and Nypro for starters but I don’t recall handing them in going into tank farms?.I remember having my breakfast in Shell Stanlow canteen and security caught a contractor lighting a ■■■ with a lighter instead of using the elements on the window sills and oiked him off the site.I think it was Monsanto that even asked for the cig lighter out of the wagon(luxury,■■■ lighter in a Marathon  ).Other places I remember were Associated Octel at E.Port and Lostock Gralam where you were not allowed to consume food on the premises except in the canteens, because of the lead present in the atmosphere, used to make lead-free petrol.

luxury,■■■ lighter in a Marathon is a bit before my time Chris, Was Nypro the plant that went up in Flixborough? I remember that happening.

The ISR at Hythe you had to hand your ■■■■ and lighter/matches/ cig lighter in as I smoked full strength and my missis used to get 140 every week ( as you could not buy them everywhere ) so I had to hand them all in at the beginning of the week and i always told them it was just a days supply.
cheers Johnnie

I forgot about ISR at Hythe Johnnie. That was the place where I never saw an operative on the benzene/toluene loading and discharge area. You used a phone on the wall and gave the control room your details and they told you which bay and pump to use to offload.Same as loading, weigh off and in again and same procedure.IIRC there was no canteen there, just machines in the security building.Great place,in and out in hour and half, tipped and loaded.

Heres one of E&N Ritchies “tanker division” ( apologies to Stuart) :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp:

hell it all comes back when you lads get going. Anybody remember Albert (yard foreman) at the Phillips terminal in Leeds? He banned quite a few fellas from there, you were in trouble if you didn’t turn the master switch off EVERY time you got in and out of the cab, and NO ■■■■■■■ splash loading, (all top loaded in those days) you stop the job, move the vehicle and start again.
But they were happy days.

Aye,things have certainly altered since the old manifolds…

And would you get away with this scruffy hazchem board nowadays? Or even the obligatory plastic bucket?

Chris

Hi GOM do you remember a lad called Hector Beaton who worked out of the Leeds terminal for Sadlers/Phillips he drove this from new.

Hiya Vic, before I left Imperial last year, I was still processing his paperwork, (Hector Beaton’s) WTD/time sheets etc, but I can’t remember which depot he was working out of. He was still on fuel tanks and a gentleman to speak to on the 'phone. Cheers, Mizzo. P.S. bit of a coincidence I should run out the contract on L866 GAJ, which John says Hector got from new.
