P S if you were over the water it had to be on a freight only ferry and usually deck cargo.

We all had a claim to fame though, no-one ever suffered from a common cold or blocked sinuses!
Malc, I did odd load out of Orgreave coking plant and they all said they never got a cold with the tar and creosote fumes not sure what it gave you though
re ici heysham there used to be a very big refinery there but it has nearly all gone from there I used to live very close to there the crude used to come in by ship at one time then by rail and road , but the refinery all but closed in the 1980s but I remember tanker of methanol being road transported out almost ever day ,by a selection of different companys including ICI own tankers, but what is left now I wouldnt know as I left the area in the 80s.christ the steam.
That will be tipping molton sulphur at Inios at Staveley, If I had a pound for every sulphur load I tipped there I could do the world cruise! Ran there with Hoyer from Exxon (Esso @ Fawley) right up to closure in Feb 2007 after that we ran to Runcorn and later to a couple of plants in France.

Staveley chemicals / Rhone poulenc / Rhodia - closed two years ago and levelled within 6 weeks !
I’m a bit bothered about copyright here but it would be a shame not to show it.
I was going in Staveley Chemicals in 1970 onwards,it was a really busy place,24/7. When I went back in for a few months in 1994 a lot of the old buildings had gone and the SCL motors were in Rhone-Poulenc livery and I think Suttons ran the transport then.Apart from that, not a lot had changed, the Vinatex site had long gone though.
This was the BTC plant…
And then they started to dismantle it…
A shame it had to go as it employed a lot of people.
i was tipping there 2006 and not much left of it. still have my old rhodia permit somewhere. i remember there was a black edition actros parked up there evry time i went in
