I thought coasting was less efficient these days as the ecu supposedly doesn’t squirt any fuel in when you’re not accelerating but if you’re out of gear it has to to keep the engine running? Or have I got this all wrong?

I always assumed that a vehicle on the overrun in gear would use zero fuel whilst one effectively coasting in neutral would require fuel to keep the engine “ticking over”. Apparently this is the case but those boffins with large foreheads reckon that the fuel lost by ticking over far outweighs the fuel used by earlier application of the throttle to gain back the speed lost due to engine braking. If that makes sense? Under certain circumstances and carrying certain weights the Merc I drive can Eco roll for four or more miles!
