Tacho-fiddling drivers

bobthedog:
I am glad that someone else admits to not having been an angel. I was beginning to think I was the only one…

bob the dog, u r not the only 1 just a small minority admit on here]

me ? i was very far off bein a 100%legal

i could tell you a few storys,

including wires fitted, no named tachos, clocks being altered, speeding, 6 hours drivin straight, its not clever but my own choice, an we was paid by the job,

firm in question had a few runs in’s with the TC in the end the place closed down anyways

bobthedog:
I am willing to bet that not half the drivers on this forum would withstand that sort of scrutiny if it came to it.

A most true statement of fact, well said young man!

I too have known Tony for around 30 years and although he has stepped away from operations since “the mafia” became involved, himself and Trevor were no different to anyone else in the game, tankers or otherwise.

Once VOSA have the scent, they tend to hunt it into submission

Santa:
What these reports don’t say is why the firms got investigated in the first place. I believe that most investigations are triggered by a disgruntled driver (more likely ex driver) writing to the LA with details of the fiddles.

I personally know of two such cases - one was started off by a driver who was sacked (he believed unjustly) for pilfering, and the other by an agency driver who had some starnge convoluted grievance. In both cases they phoned the LA and were told to put it in writing. Once they did that and sent copies of tachos and time sheets, that was it; dozens of drivers fined and suspended and the firms fined large amounts.

I know a Lady who runs a Pub,and her Man drives.
As,after refurbishing her Pub the Health and Safety Inspector warned her closing the Pub down as she removed a Wall and the supporting Pillow wasn’t strong enough, began she crying, complaining that her Man has to drive on two Tachocharts a Day to bring with Work from Sunday Night to Saturday Morning £350.- home, and the Manager get for doing nothing three Times that much. She just can’t afford spending more at present as refurbishing costed £10000.-
Well,The Company closed down,Manager and Owner went cut down,as well as some Drivers.
Well,…

“The Mafia”… Love it!

I have been away from the UK for nearly four years now, and away from the jobs that took me to Liverpool for a couple more years than that so I am out of touch.

And you are right, Wheelnut, it wasn’t restricted to tank work, although I found tanks more demanding hours wise than other work. That said, I loved the chase.

Regardless, I wish all of them well. Once the drivers get their licences back, they ought to think about a change. The witchhunt will always be on for them. It’s a damned shame.

Did Translact get done for overhours.Milk tanker outfit.?

That was who I subbed for before going on to H&S. They were…erm…not very well behaved.

I think they got clobbered fairly hard but never really heard much about it. Thing is, there is a big difference between them and Armets, a really big difference.

To be fair to Armets or more precisely ARMET Logistics, the original company formed by A R Metcalfe was bought by young Charlie.

Armet Carrying utilised a lot of owner drivers and sub contract hauliers.

I think that most of the older drivers on here have probably in the past run bent for one reason or another (hands up guilty your honour)…but I think times have changed and its something thats not expected like it used to be.

Despite thier faults I think the digital tacho will put an end to it for most people in the end…its extremely difficult to hide what you are doing on them…pull a fuse and you get a power interruption message…run without a card and it comes up with the no driver card message and then it all gets stored for VOSA to look at later…Ive heard all about the magnets etc but I dont think i could be arsed with all that in the pouring rain…its not easy like whipping a wire onto a tacho power line while sitting in the cab.

I know most drivers (myself included) hate the ■■■■■■■ things but given time they will probably work out to be a good thing for protecting drivers.

As for fiddling them I know they say "“Wheres theres a will theres a way” but I havent heard of anything that would 100% hide what you had been doing.
Times have changed from the 80s and 90s and I think that most firms that are still bending the rules will get caught out in the end
